Just as I thought I was almost done, I approached a jeweler who suggests this stone to me (Egl - Usa).

Weight 1.73 ct.
Shape ROUND BRILLIANT
Color F
Clarity SI2
Measurements 7.74 - 7.69 x 4.8 mm
Depth 62.2
Table 54.0
Crown 16.0
Pavilion 43.0
Girdle THIN TO SL. THICK FACETED
Polish VERY GOOD
Symmetry VERY GOOD
Fluorescence FAINT
Culet NONE
Cut Grade IDEAL

The jeweler seems to have a good reputation (I checked) and his prices are good. Any advice on this stone? It does well in the cut advisor software. The jeweler told me he submitted the stone to EGL-USA so that he could get the cut info. He guarantees that the si-2 is 100% eye clean. (is that wishful thinking?) Any thoughts appreciated!

EGL USA isn''t the highest regarded grading lab in the states. You might want to run a search in the archives to find out more about pros and cons of EGL reports.
With that being said, each SI2 is a different call... Did it look eye-clean to you? what kind of inclusion is the grade setter?
The cut info suggests this is a fairly well cut stone.. Maybe a tad on the deeper side, but it could be a great deal, if priced right.

It looks good but have you seen this stone? It''s a little deep. You need to see it to see if it''s eye clean or not. There are good SI2''s and not so good SI2''s. Good luck.

Thank you both for your comments. I''ve researched the whole Egl-Usa issue and am comfortable purchasing with their certification. Even if the F color is really a G, I still find it to be a good deal. My only concerns are the depth % and the clarity. The cut is certified as ideal and the jeweler, who appears to be very reputable, says it is equivalant to an AGS 000. The LA lab of EGL-USA rated the cut as ideal. My main concern is that the depth % will make the stone appear smaller than a typical 1.73, but I suspect the result will be neglible. As far as clarity goes, the jeweler claims it to be a top si-2 that is totally eye clean and has offered me a five day, no questions asked full refund policy. I have not yet seen the stone.

On a side note, when looking at the listed diamond measurements, can someone please explain to me the significance of the three numbers 7.74 - 7.69 x 4.8 mm? I''ve searched throughout the tutorials and can''t find it. Thanks again.

The three numbers are the actual dimensions of the stone. The first two are the range of horizontal dimensions. Even though the diamond is round it isn't PERFECTLY round. It's normal for the diameter to be off by a few hundreths of a mm, and you won't be able to see the difference. The third lower number is the measurement of the stone's depth or height from the table to the cutlet.

"eye clean' refferes to what a diamond looks like top down - it may be possible to see some inclusions from the side or bottom-up without magnification, but that becomes relatively unimporatnt once the stone is set. Under magnification, some inclusions will show, which may be important if you want to wear this under a loupe !

You can check if the size of this diamond is affected by depth at all - run a search for ideal cuts of 1.7-1.75 cts, any color & clarity and compare diameters (see the search by cut quality above). The common wisedom says that .2mm makes for some barely visible difference - definitely subtle to go into oblivion once two stones are no longer comapred side by side. Less than that is not worth talking about, IMO. Anyway, on a quick search like that your stone does not appear smaller than its H&A peers - all for the better.

Keep us posted !

Valerie and Pear:

Thank you both for your insight and your comments. As of now I am leaning towards purchasing this stone, but I need to sleep on it a day or two before I make up my mind.
