HI Everyone!
Rhino- wouldn''t many people in the trade consider a modern RBC with a 63% table to be "off made"- by virtue of that fact alone?

I''m actually doing a very informal test using a 60% table GIA stone, with an AGS 0.
I''ve taken real life video and photos, and also have Imagem, ASET and IS on each stone.

Hi Dave,

While a 63% table throws up a red flag that information in and of itself tells me very little. Whenever I hear numbers on a diamond ... any numbers the next thoughts going through this noggin are ...

a. What is the crown angles coupled with that 63% table?
b. What pavilion angles are coupled with those crown angles?
c. What is the lower half facet length coupled with that pavilion/crown data?
d. How steep or shallow are the upper half angles?
e. What is the Optical Symmetry like?
f. How deep?

When I am trying to form in my minds eye the appearance of any given round diamond these are the questions going through my mind. Without this data its a roll of the dice. ASET/Dxray imagery certainly helps and while I am a strong advocate of technologies acknowledge they aren''t always end/all be all solutions too becuase once I know cut data then there are a series of questions pertaining to clarity and color I generally do not see on a lab report either.

All the best,

Interesting Jon- thanks for the well thought out answer.
I've always considered a table of 63% a "deal breaker. Have you seen really well cut stones with a 63% table?.

My point was really that seeing a video with a well cut non ideal stone, versus a stone that scores really well in ASET IS is an interesting subject to me.

I would be interested in seeing this too. I was always curious how much of a difference H&A made over an otherwise excellent diamond that just happened to not be H&A.
i wouldn''t be able to tell the difference if both stones were well cut,but i can easily tell the difference b/t my wife''s non ideal cut stones and her top ideal cut H&A stones. the IS would tell the same story showing that the non ideal cuts does have light leakage.

I''ve shot these kind of comparisons before and more than once. Here''s the thing ... what one person defines as "excellent cut" or "ideal" isn''t necessarily what would constitute my own, or what would qualify as one that bears my signature. "Excellent'' is generally associated with the GIA Excellent grade while "Ideal" with the standards that constitute AGS Ideal. Being familiar with the intricacies that make up the grades from either lab there is a certain standard that constitutes my own standard which I''ve been picking for, for many years before GIA or AGS released their current grades. So when a person asks the question ... show me a comparison of an excellent cut alongside *your* excellent cut my first question is ... what are your standards for "excellent cut"? Is it merely a GIA Ex? Is it simply 60/60? Is it HCA
Each of these elements *to me* personally are simply small pieces on a puzzle that defines what I know to be the rarest elements in diamond cutting. Let me know *your* standards elle or kevin and if I have something on hand that meets this criteria I''ll be happy to show you, time permitting.

Kind regards,

Wazzup Dave?

63% table a deal breaker: If I am purchasing for stock I generally will not waste my time with tables of this size. If I am showing a client who is after a budget diamond I will let them decide if its the deal breaker or not even if I don''t/won''t back it. Have I seen really well cut stones with 63%? Not too long ago I had here a diamond with superior Optical Symmetry, 34.x crown with 40.8 pavilion angles andd a table that was in the mid 60''s. It got a GIA VG grade because of the table size. It''s fire and sparkle were *killer* but it suffered in brightness and patterned scintillation due to too much darkness, caused from head/body obstruction under the table. That was the best looking one I''ve seen to date. Otherwise ... nope. :)

Define for me "well cut non ideal" and if I have such on hand I''ll be happy to show it to you alongside what I know to be the rarest stuff. Are you simply referring to just a 60/60? No particular crown/pavilion/lower half/star/upper half data?
