I know Good Old Gold and Brian Gavin Diamonds have terrific reputations among PS members for fancy diamonds and ovals in particular. Given that ovals really need to be seen to ensure they are good performers ... would you assume any oval that GOG or Brian Gavin selects and lists for sale is going to be a pretty good one compared to other ovals available for purchase? Or are there going to be some duds sold by GOG and BG, too?

No. There will be mediocre ovals on sale at GOG. And there will be better ones as well. You will want to call them and have them source stones for you. And you will want to specify "Great performance, bright stones, eyeclean, and minimal bowtie." And also give them color, budget and approximate size (in dimensions not carat weight) as well as l/w ratio if that's something important to you. BGD doesn't stock ovals. So they would also have to source. And you would give them the same information.
