I'm wondering if any of my jewelry loving folks here have an interest in or knowledge of rare coins? My dear Dad, who passed away in July, had what appears to be an extensive collection and quick research shows there could be some value there. It's an overwhelming task to even begin figuring out what we have. I'm open to thoughts and advice if you have any to share!

my condolences on the loss of your dad

a bit left feild as i know nothing about coins
but if you do eventually dispose of his collection you could save a few of the prettiest coins (perhaps the less vaulable) to be made into coin jewlery
i have seen some lovelly exapmples of coin jewlery

DF was the resident coin expert.
It's Sad because he would have loved to help you.

Sorry about the loss of your dad.

I like to collect coins but I'm not an expert.
Perhaps if you try contacting your local numismatic club or society (i.e. coin club), they might be able to point you in the right direction?

I am sorry for your loss. It's an honor that you received his collection. True coin collectors are passionate!

Buillon coins are worth only the value of metal. Some coins have numismatic value as well. Rarity and condition are key. There is a forum coincommunity.com similar to ps. They will help you tremendously in determining whether coins should be graded (would be GIA equivalent). Oftentimes it isn't worth the money to have coins graded. Try to find a reputable coin shop. They will help you as well. If you want to trade online, apmex is reputable and I have bought and sold from them in the past. The drawback is that coins are heavy and shipping/insurance is expensive (especially silver). It is often best to go local when selling buillon. My FIL had a large coin collection and I researched it quite a bit. He was more a metal investor than a collector. Out of many hundreds of coins, only 3 had numismatic value. It's fun but be prepared to go down quite a few rabbit holes!

For US coins, this book is a valuable reference.

@Gussie , Thanks so much -- that's very helpful! You identified the difficulty -- knowing what you (might) have and having an understanding of the potential value, then finding someone trustworthy to help with selling. I do think we have some pieces worth going through the grading process for. I will learn more, and I will definitely check out both the forum and the book!
