After extensive reading and learning from these forums, I have decided to pursue an antique style cushion for an engagement ring. As I value the opinions of the cushion experts here, I thought I would solicit your opinions on the stone below. To me it seems a bit deep and faces up a bit small for the size when compared to other stones of this type and size. Additionally this stone seems to be cut in a slightly different style from others I''ve seen with a more elongated culet and thicker pavilion mains. Opinions?

Old Mine Brilliant
2.37 I/VS1 (8.19 x 7.39 x 5.37) [L/W= 1.11]
Pol/Sym: G/G
72.7% depth
51% table
slightly large culet
no flour
girdle: thin to thick, faceted

It''s hard to tell from just one picture ... but I am a bit concerned about the depth & face up size ... and, frankly, the face up pattern as captured by that one shot doesn''t appeal to me viscerally. There are shots of cushions that make me start salivating. This isn''t one of them -- yet.

Thanks for the reply Deco... Any other cushion aficionados out there have an opinion on this stone?

Symmetry is only good and I can tell. It is too asymmetrical for me. Otherwise, as mentioned, it is hard to tell from this one picture.

On second glance ... the color is bothering me too. I think *personally* I'd pick a slightly smaller "G" or "H" color ... or MAYBE an "I" with blue fluor (which makes stones face up whiter)

Yeah, what scares me is that the vendor was able to take as many pics as they liked then send one to you... and this is the one.

Symmetry is really bugging me too. I like warmer old stones... but this one is just looking dark. Like it doesn''t reflect light but absorbs it. Sorry!

Like Deco, I too have been known to drool on my keyboard when I see luscious antique cushions, but this one doesn''t do it for me. Sorry. I think it''s mainly the asymetry, coupled with the depth and spread.

I''m sure you can do better!

I''m not a cushion expert but this stone is too yellow for my taste. just my 2 cents.

There are a lot of different nuances when it comes to old-cuts..., some have larger culets or elongated..., same with pav. mains and corners..., some like thin corners and wider mains and the contrary...

I guess it all depends on your taste!

Sorry, but my opinion differs.

Spread is fine for a 2.37 ct.
I must admit a better image could help..., but it has the potential being a great looking Old-Mine Brilliant.
Symmetry is good..., although I have plenty of clients who prefer older cuts with (what GIA classifies as...) fair symmetry.

The asymmetrical faceting alignments some of these old-cuts posses actually gives a lot of character...

As far as color is concern..., the Diamond might look whiter in real life.

Thank you for all of the responses! I spoke with the vendor regarding my concerns with the stone and he felt it was simply an issue of poor photography. I''m going to have a chance to see the stone in person later this week so that should settle the questions of symetry, face up size, and body color. As folks here say "Cushions must be judged with the eyes". I''ll report back with my impressions after I''ve seen the stone in person.

It''s nice, but isn''t AMAZING. At least from what I can tell with that one picture. If you need a stone ASAP I don''t think it would be a bad choice, but if you have time, I would see what else you might be able to come up with.
