Hi there,

I am wondering if it is worth paying 2-3K more for an antique emerald cut diamond than a new one. There is a gorgeous stone that is just under 2ct and it is EGL certed. When I price stones from PS vendors, comparable ones are 2-3K less and they are GIA certed. Is this what you would expect? Thanks.

No, I would not expect an antique emerald cut diamond to be worth more than a modern emerald cut diamond of the same quality. This doesn''t mean it couldn''t cost more though. That would depend on the seller''s overhead and markup. A fine antique jewelry store in a premium location for example might have a higher markup than an internet vendor with no showroom operating at minimal cost with minimal markup.

That aside, and in general, I also wouldn''t expect an emerald cut with an EGL report to cost more than an emerald cut with the same grading having a GIA report, unless possibly the EGL stone had a substantially better make than the GIA stone.

Antique based on what? Is is set in an Antique piece..., or is it just based on the vendors info.?
A lot of factors to take into consideration when valuing Antiques...

Its not so easy as comparing to modern cuts...
