Was wondering what you guys think of the following stone.

2.74, H, VS2

Depth: 61.3
Crown: 35.3
Table: 56.8
Pavilion: 40.4

Scored a .7 on the HCA but fell outside of GIA’s excellent range.

It’s also an “old” AGS ideal and since the certs from 10/05, doesn’t have a light return score.
I spoke with Katie today and she’s trying to get it in for me. Just not sure how comfortable I am with it.
How much potential do you guys think it has?

(My husband made it very clear this is going to be my first and "last" upgrade so trying to get it perfect)

it needs too be checked for contrast issues.
40.4 is a bit shallow for 35.3 pavilion.
It would likely be an ags1 in the new system would be my guess and should be selling at a discount.

Thanks for replying Storm.
Not sure what ya mean about the contrast issues?

If you are trying to get perfect, I''d personally keep looking. I know beggars can''t be choosers so much when looking at this size stone, but really, I think you can do better.

How low will you go in color and clarity? I''d love to help you look.

Hi ellen (btw love your name)
41.gif

That''s about as low as I''m willing to go in color and clarity. I was thinking "I" at first but even though I''m not color sensitive, the setting i''m getting is pretty open and i can see the tint from the side in certain lighting. Clarity wise the "mind clean" ends at VS2.

This is one of the few cases where I know i can get a bigger stone with an "I" for not that much more but i just can''t do it
7.gif

If you happen to see something, by all means please post it. It''s no rush but i''d like to get something sometime soon. but if nothing''s available, I''ll wait
until the perfect one comes along.

Thanks!

Nothing wrong with knowing your limits. I don''t know what this stone you posted cost, but I can pretty much guess, even finding one at the same color, clarity and size, but with better numbers, would run you more. You do get what you pay for. So, I don''t know what your cap is on the budget, but you might have to go down a smidge in size, to get a really well cut stone. I, and pretty much everyone else on here, would do the same. A great cut means everything, and will make a smaller stone puff itself up and yell, look at me!!
2.gif

Yeah, i don''t mind going down a bit in size but when i did a search, nothing came up. I chose that one because it was an AGS0 (before i knew it was the old cert).
Budget, is about 33k for the stone.
I don''t need an H&A stone, but an AGS0 with a vendor that can confirm it''s good is fine by me
1.gif

What''s the smallest you would go down?

Probably a bit over 2.50 because i''m a klutz and would be scared i''d chip it (repolishing means losing weight i think?).
Also, i don''t exactly have the smallests fingers
7.gif
I''m a size 7 but wear a 7 1/2 so they don''t look like sausagies
7.gif
and my rings feel better a little loose.
Hence why i''m trying to get a larger stone instead of going smaller and colorless.

that''s a beautiful stone. hmm, now wondering if i''m willing to go smaller. oh wow, decisions.
This is getting harder and harder.

Well, I''m not a"size" gal, so I don''t know how much my opinion really counts.

I wanted to say, but didn''t want to appear as if I was trying to talk you down, that a 2.3 is nothing to sneeze at. And a 7 finger is not big. I personally think it would look lovely, but you have to be happy, you''re the one wearing it.

One thing to think of, even though hubby said you only get one shot. He needs to understand big diamonds don''t grow on trees. They are scarce. If he were willing to maybe let this one get traded in once, you could have Jon watching out for exactly what you want forever.

Elle - a nice stone in this size range is hard to find. I just pulled the trigger on a 2.75 G-VS1 stone (G was my lowest threshold for color and like you, I was willing to go down to a VS2). That GOG stone that Ellen posted looks really nice. I was trying to find something in the 2.8-2.9 range, but like I said, hard to find...especially once I put the G / VS2 limits on there.

What''s the spread on that first stone you posted?

hehe, i agree with ya 100% but i already have an engagement ring that''s not getting traded in. (I''m giving it to my SIL since she''s like my sister). I think that''s why he''s so adament about no more upgrades. The cost between both those rings.. ugh. He also got me my 5 stone from whiteflash last August and a year earlier my pendant from GOG.
He thinks my diamond "hobby" needs to end now!! lol. But you never know.
I just showed him the stone and since we''re in NY and I''ve been to GOG before, we''re gonna drive out this Saturday to look at in person.

Thanks very much for all your help, Ellen. Who knows maybe this is the one.

sorry to continue the mini threadjack!

mrssalvo, to answer your question, I decided to go with that 2.75 that Bill found for me. So, I wired him the $ today and he placed the order with Michael B. We''re doing the petite princess 3-sided with diamond prongs and tips + the matching w-band. I was a little uncertain about the 2.75 stone because of the 35/41 angles (and no pictures), but decided that it was way too hard to find a stone in this size range with ALL my desired specs. I trust Bill will look at the stone and be able to tell me if it''s a winner or not once he gets it. I''m just going to trust that his eyeballs and experience are good enough. Besides, all this obsessing was driving me crazy and I literally couldn''t do anything else! I just had to pick something and move on before I let all other aspects of my life fall by the wasteside.

BTW, elle - I''m glad you''re going to have a chance to look at the GOG stone yourself! I''m excited for you if it''s the ONE.

OMG cutey that is just awesome. Believe me, bill has an amazing eye and will be totally honest with you on the stone. and you're getting the MB 3 sided set to boot!! that was so on the top of my list as well and what i was actually in the process of saving for. i'm just so happy for you. I can't tell you how many times i've tried that set on and just adore it. You are going to be so thrilled!!!

Totally threadjacking now...! mrssalvo - thanks! The 4-week countdown has begun... BTW, when do you get your *gorgeous* ring back, sized down? I posted in your original thread, but that thing looks huge and perfect on you. I checked with Bill to see if there was anything on that Daniel K closeout list for me, but there wasn''t anything in the carat weight I was looking for (*boo hoo!). Bill is great though, and I am glad to be working with him again. Yes, MB is $$$, but the workmanship is beautiful in person. They just raised their prices too, effective tomorrow 2/15.

hey elle, please do report back with your thoughts on the GOG stone. meanwhile you''re there, maybe they can pull out some other ones for you!

hopefully you''ll find what you''re looking for!

Just wanted to say thanks for your help ladies of PS!!

Ellen- I was going to reserve the gog stone this morning but my husband made a point. He said, I wouldn''t be happy with anything under 2.50 and I''d start bugging him again in a few months for an upgrade to which he''d say "no". He''s right.

Sooo.. there''s another stone availbale that Whiteflash called in for me and should there on Tuesday. This one seems to have potential.

2.52, G, VS2
Depth: 60.9
Table: 56
crown: 34
Pav: 41
Cut grade: Excellent
Polish and Symm both excellent.

Ran it though the HCA and it scored a 1.3

Any opinions?

It doesn''t have to be an H&A. In fact, while a few of my stones are, the others that have a cut grade of excellent also show the arrows patttern and I can''t tell them apart so no h&a is fine by me.

Thanks again ladies.
