Hi everyone, I''ve been reading posts on this forum for a few weeks, finally mustered up the guts to start my own thread.

I''ve been looking at the following princess cut diamond at a local dealer:

Measurements: 5.63 x 5.63 x 3.99 mm
Carat Weight: 1.02 carat
Color Grade: H
Clarity Grade: SI1
Depth: 70.9%
Table: 68%
Girdle: Very Thin to Very Thick
Culet: None
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None

This is all of the information I have at the moment from the GIA report, any initial thoughts/opinions?

What additional information should I request for in order to help make a decision? Thanks in advance.

Welcome, glad you decided to join us!

What I would request are -

an ASET image -

and a Sarin report to give detailed measurements of this diamond - BUT as the diamond is with a local retailer you might not be successful as it is rare these establishments offer such services. What you could do however is order an ASETscope, these are easy to use and the images straightforward to interpret.

Also concerning the very thin area of the girdle, be cautious here and get an unbiased expert to check this out, it could be fine but if the very thin part covers a considerable portion of the girdle and or is down in the microns, this could be a potential durability issue. The variance of very thin to very thick isn't generally desirable but often seen in the commercial cut quality Princess. Check also that this diamond is eyeclean, again see if you can view it away from the store lighting, then you can loupe it afterwards ( best this way round that you don't know where the inclusions are otherwise you give your eyes an advantage!)

If you like what you see then ask if you can view the diamond outside in plain daylight or hold it under a desk, watch to see if it " dies". Some reduction in brilliance is ok but you want the diamond to be "awake" at least in reduced lighting. Lastly, if there is a Jareds near you, as an exercise go and view their AGS0 Peerless Princess, this will give you a good base of comparison as to how a well cut Princess should behave. Do view as many Princess as you can so you know exactly what appeals to you for appearance and performance, you will soon get a feel for this and which are better cut than others just by looking and watching and comparing.

Hope this helps

Lorelei,

Thanks for the helpful reply. I''ll give your suggestions a shot and I''ll probably be back with more questions haha.

if you do not wish to buy an ASET, you can trust any price scope vendor here that provides the ASET image for you. I purchased a WhiteFlash ACA princess cut, and after learning quite a bit about princess cuts.. having this image can be THE best way to tell if the diamond is of quality cut! Numbers alone will not and can not tell the whole story for princess cut diamonds, don''t let the salesmen tell you any differently.

Make sure you look at that diamond in various lighting, not in the store if possible. Also, if there is a Jared''s close to you, I''d go check out their Peerless princess cuts. This will give you a reference to go by of an excellent cut diamond!

good luck,

-ted
