That's interesting DF, what about you? Are you superstitious?

I'm on the other side of the pond in the UK. I think we would call it 'gut instinct' or 'intuition' rather than superstition. Animals use it all the time. However, over many years we have switched off our intuitive side...and tend to base our decisions on logic.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say you're NOT supersititious. You're 'straight up and down'. Straight talking, no messing about! Is that right??? I can't imagine you sticking one finger in the air, to test which way the wind is blowing. LOL

I''m Viet, so superstitious it''s funny.

For example I bought a suit for my first interview in med school. I was rejected. Therefore, I gave the suit away even though it was really expensive.

When I write an exam I have the following ritual : a) NO e-ring (it''s bad luck)
b) I always use the same pencil
c) I use a specific school bag
d) I study in a specific seat in the library the morning of the exam
e) Etc. If I deviate from any of routine behavior and it goes bad, then
I chalk it up to bad luck and avoid this thing next time.

But I don''t have supersitions about black cats, or stepping on cracks. I wouldn''t get married on the 13 th though.

As the child of a holocaust survivor, I grew up with some strange superstitions - no whistling in the house, and always have a thread in your mouth of someone is sewing on a garment you are wearing at the time - and these things stayed with me even though I don''t really understand them, so at this point I don''t consider them to be superstitions as much as heritage :O)

I don''t have any superstitions, in fact, 13 is and has always been a great number and the religion in which I grew up strongly believes that as well. I don''t have a problem with black cats, walking under ladders or opening umbrellas in the house (as long as your careful not to hurt anyone!).

All American through and through, and Southern Bell to boot. Well it''s not as much as being superstitious as it is being more traditional about things in life that we just grow custom to. It''s not don''t do that because of what could happen or you don''t want this or that to go wrong do you, it''s more like that''s how we do it ( down here ) and that''s that. And don''t get me wrong that''s only a small percent of americans. ( IMO )

I am sooooo supersticious. I knock on wood for good luck. Poor knuckles were raw waiting for Ashley to get into Penn. I never walk under a ladder. I forget the rest but as I think of them I''ll add them.

I''m sort of superstitious I think....(not like black cats and ladders or anything....)

I''m more of a person who believes objects can be good luck....knock on wood if I say something hasn''t happened to me....there are some buddhist superstitions I believe in....I believe you shouldn''t anger ghosts, etc...

Kinda a miss-match of my own beliefs, buddhism, and just rumor superstitions.....

Never make up a lie as an excuse or it just might actually happen. ex: I''m late for work today because my car broke down.

Never say "this has never happened to me / or in a long time" because it just might actually happen

Never say "what''s the worst that can happen" or "things can''t get any worse" because you just might find out

As a fellow Belle I agree. It is more of a learned behavior here. Ya''ll wouldn''t believe some of the things we are taught here.

But I also believe in Karma in a BIG way. It will come around and kick you in the a$$.

I''m Chinese-American, born and raised in the United States, and I''m superstitious as hell. I don''t allow my friends to touch my shoulder or borrow money from me when we''re gambling in Vegas, I try not to wash my hair on Chinese New Year Day (forgot about that this year), I clean the entire house before Chinese New Year, read the Chinese and astrological horoscopes, and I believe in ghosts. Ghosts scare the living daylights out of me. Must run in the family, because my dad claims that he can see ghosts. And my sister and I are convinced that we lived in a haunted house once. We used to hate being in a room alone in that house. I used to get the weirdest feeling in my stomach and was convinced that there was something or someone watching me whenever I was alone. Plus, that house was always dark and dim.

Oh, and it doesn''t help that my dad told us later (after we moved out) that he saw a ghost of a little blond girl there once. She appeared in the kitchen when my little cousin was having a birthday party. My dad thought she was one of my cousin''s friends and asked her why she wasn''t playing with the other kids. She just stared at him without answering. She had pigtails and was wearing blue dress. My dad figured she was just shy, so he turned around to grab something from the counter and when he turned back, she had disappeared. Later, he asked my cousin about that little girl, and my cousin had no idea who he was talking about, and no one else at the party saw her.

My sister and I still have nightmares about that house. We used to accompany each other whenever we had to go get something from the bedrooms that were located in the back of the house.

Sorry for the long post, but this is a subject that really interests me. Plus, I feel really foolish for still being afraid of the dark at my age.

What goes around...

That sums it up I think. And sometimes things happen for a reason. I was involved in a bad accident but it led to some good events, and has made my life better in many ways. BTW I am NOT talking about money.

i don't think i'm really superstitious. but i do have my own rituals.

i also knock on wood all the time. i won't talk about ghosts in the house or anything like that because of the old saying that you will invite them in that way. also i believe if you feel a presence/spirit around you that bothers you, that you can tell it to go away and it will.

also now i am a firm believer in never saying something hasn't happened because then it will...i did this last year and said that i hadn't been called for jury duty in years...welp 3 weeks later guess what came in the mail?!

also i believe in karma, what goes around comes around big time, but for me it's more specific aka cultivating good parking karma, or good work karma etc...

Ok here is a wierd one. I was flying home from Nantucket post 9/11. I was flying by myself. The passenger across from me caused a real scene. He had a dog that wasn't in a carrier. The attendant asked him nicely to put him in the carrier. Small plane and not room for this small dog to be roaming free. He was very nervous before the flight. I was thinking oh dear lord, please don't let this creep sit anywhere near me. Luck would have it that he was right across from me. So after the flight attendant asks him again, he went to hit her. We are up in the air at this point. The guys all around me dive to help control him. I had a friend who was on the plane and he was several seats behind me. He said Lisa come back here, sit with me. I was so supersticious about my seat assignment, but threw caution to the wind and sat with my friend. When we landed the guy was arrested and the police took our statements. That was a flight from hell. But my gut said don't change your seat, now how dumb is that??

Hmm, while I wouldn''t say I''m superstitious, this thread has got me thinking! When I was little, I remember my mom telling my brother and me to never open an umbrella indoors, because it meant someone would die. I remember my brother sitting next to me in the car and telling me to hold my feet off the floorboards while we were driving past a cemetary so we wouldn''t tread on the dead! My dad used to drive my brother and me into the country and make us walk through old, abandoned houses so we''d see there was nothing to be afraid of, probably because he thought my mother had scared us to death with her superstitions!

The only superstitions I really have now, I guess, are knocking wood, not telling a lie for fear it may come true if it''s used as an excuse, and I still think when a black cat crosses the street in front of you when you''re driving it''s bad luck for you. I guess maybe I am superstitious after all!

I’m not usually superstitious but I went to a psychic the other day and she told me that someone cast a bad spell on me and that I had darkness all around me (A devious person - someone close to me (a female) took a personal item or piece of clothing and went to a evil psychic and they did something so that things would not workout for me) - and this is the reason why so many bad things are happening to me. Well I totally brushed it off but now I feel maybe she is right. My dad was diagnosed with cancer 6 months ago and exactly a week after I saw the psychic our little yorkie doggy got so sick (had an operation) and was in hospital for 4 days – so many other things are also happening to me…. It’s weird…hopefully my luck will turn for the better soon…
Have you guys heard anything about “bad” spells and evil psychics before?

Wait a minute: that isn''t common, or particularly American... but my grandmother did it! Where are you guys from (if it is alright to ask). The grandparents I am talking about were from the eastern part of Romania and a region that is now western Ukraine, respectively.

You don''t have to answer, of course. Just curious... I had almost forgotten about these things!

You know, it''s funny. I''m not really into superstition, but there is one thing I do that I just realized that I do today. My DH left for a couple of weeks for a school. I took him to the airport and dropped him off. The flight path on good days is right over my house, and today is one of those days. At around the time that he was scheduled to take off, I went to the back yard and sure enough I got to see his plane fly over. I waved to it hoping he might see (it was really low), but before it was out of sight, I went back in the house.

This is because I once heard that when a loved one leaves that you are not supposed to watch their car or plane completely out of sight because they won''t return if you do. I didn''t even realize that I do that until today.

On a funny note, my DH kissed me bye and said, "Be good. Be safe, and be here when I get back."
