Glad I found this forum. I've started the process of looking for a ring for my fiancé, and as others here probably, I'm completely intimidated by the process. I feel a little better now that I've educated myself a bit, and looked at diamonds. Wanted to get some opinions on pricing. It seems like all my friends who bought rings recently got much better deals - so not sure If i'm missing anything.

In short, i'm looking for a round stone. My total budget for the ring is around 13K - so i'm looking to spend anywhere between 10K and 11K for the rock.

I've been quoted for about 11K from a jeweler an excellent (triple ex?), 1.40 ct, VS2, light blue flouresance, and I color.

The I color is throwing me off - my parents are my eyes at the moment since (I live in NYC and i'm looking outside of NY for the ring) and they said it was beautiful. But I was expecting a cheaper stone at the I level. Any thoughts if this sounds about right? Or, am I not providing enough detail.

I was hoping to get around 1.5 ct, and up the color to around a G or an F - but that is looking to completely blow my price out of the water. So i'm going to stick to under 1.5.

Thanks.

I'm a newbie myself, but here are some alternatives that seem to fit your budget and wants.

1.54 I VS2 HCA 1.1 $10,916

1.52 H VS2 HCA 1.6 $10,441

Getting something in the F-H range seems tougher.

1.42 H VS2 HCA .7 (!) $11,025

1.4 G VS2 HCA 2.4 (but might be worth getting a IS) $10,761

I have dealt with Yoni at Eternity, and he is able to pull Idealscope images of some of the virtual diamonds listed on his site (if they are with a broker in the NYC area). Very easy to deal with, and he's local for you. Good luck.

Why look outside NYC when most diamonds are in NYC to begin with? If I live in NYC I would spend a day to visit GOG, and perhaps visit JA and IDJ as well.

James allen does have a NY office, by appointment only. So you if you want to see the stone above in person they would be able to do that for you.
