DH and I are FINALLY getting our D90 this week! So excited!
36.gif

We''ve gotten mixed opinions about the lenses, however! And now I''m confused. A lot of people said do not get the kit lens, others said yes get it - it''s just fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is that a good first lens for novice camera users, or will we grow out of it quickly? Any other lenses that we should buy instead of that one?

Thanks!

For most, the kit lens is just fine - the picture quality is decent and it has a good range for a variety of photo opportunities. What do you think you will be primarily using it for - outdoors in good light, indoors in bad light?

Definitely both. I''ll probably take 8 million pictures of the cats (inside) the first day we get it. J will want to go downtown and take pictures outside with it.

Definitely both. I''ll probably take 8 million pictures of the cats (inside) the first day we get it. J will want to go downtown and take pictures outside with it.

Then two things - one, you will need to use flash MOST of the time indoors (for the kitties, this isn''t a bad idea as they will likely be moving a lot and a flash will freeze them), and for J''s outdoor photos, the lens will work best in full daylight, even if it''s diffused by clouds. The kit lens will not do well in low light at all, despite the awesome sensor. You''ll still end up with some grain or blurring from moving objects.

If that works fine for your purposes, then I would totally just stick with the kit lens. If you do end up wanting something faster, I can recommend a couple of quicker lenses that handle low light better.

Yes, please... recommend away! I''ll probably have J read this thread.

Awesome! Do you have a price range, or would you just like to know what I personally would recommend? I can go cheap or I can go really high quality. For now I will share what I have on my D300, both of which are my favorites and I love, love, love.

The Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 -
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=tamron+lenses&oe=utf-8&ved=0CDoQrQQwAg&cid=7103450296289187348&sa=title#p

This is my version of the kit lens. It rarely leaves my camera - it''s super fast and works in just about any lighting situation, it''s pretty light, and it''s sharp as a tack. It will work equally well for your kitty shots and for J''s landscapes (if that''s what outdoors meant). I use it literally for everything, except macro, which is my next suggestion.

The Sigma 50mm F2.8 Macro -
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002P19Q2/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0000501SJ&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0FXJ06MJZ8KSAS1J1565

This lens is sharp, and is a true macro (meaning it shows images in 1:1 quality, true to life). It also works for just about anything else, as I have used it for landscapes, portraits, and the occasional party situation. Since it is a "fixed" lens, it isn''t quite as flexible indoors, but it works fabulously in low light.

Basically, if you want something that will work well in any lighting situation, you want the F-stop (the F2.8 in both of my examples are the F-Stop) to go as low as possible.

If J would like examples (or you!) I can also post some images taken with those lenses.

Ok, well our budget for the D90 right now is about 1600. So if we get the body only... that leaves us about 6-700 for lenses to start.

So what I want is a good versatile lens that will be good in most lighting conditions, and probably a good macro lens (which it looks like you''ve suggested both) so I''ll take a look at those. If you have any other suggestions, lay ''em on me.

We probably don''t need the epic fantastic most expensive lenses. Just a really solid quality one.

You can get both lenses in your budget, too.
