Annoyed my jeweller

Well I've been very picky and I can see why they are getting annoyed. Basically I am reluctant to buy the stone for a few reasons. It's a VS2 cloud/feather and they won't tell me where the feather is, saying it's hard to find. That concerns me, but what concerns me more is that they won't factor that in to setting the diamond (6 claw platinum mount) and that could make things worse. The stone is very reasonably priced and they offer free clean & polish for life which is a small bonus. This is in the UK btw, this is about as good as it gets over here.

Other option is I can buy from the US and get a h&a which I think I would like because I think it makes the diamond look 'crisper' and sparkle more, since the UK stone is a GIA ex/vg/ex and no scope images so I assume not 'ideal' even though the hca is very high. Should I be concerned about the feather to the extent of not buying the stone? And do you think the h&a stone will look so much better it will be worth buying from the US? It would cost me a bit more to buy from the US but not masses.

This is the UK stone, if I were to buy from the US I'd get a h&a AGS 000 .7 f/g VS2:

.73 G VS2 EX VG EX
HCA 0.8
5.82 - 5.85 x 3.58 mm
Depth: 61.3
Table: 54
Crown angle 34.5
Crown height 15.5
Pavilion angle 40.6
Pavilion depth 42.5
Star length 50%
Lower half 80%
Medium (3%).
No fluorescence
No culet
Cloud, feather, laser inscribed.

I take it the stone is not certified by GIA or AGS since you don't have a plot to show you the feather.

I would definitely recommend buying a stone that is certified. At least then you know exactly what you are buying. Many of the Pricescope vendors featured here off much in depth analysis of their stones so there is no guesswork involved. I hate for anyone to spend more than they have to but there are times the money is well spent!

Here's an example of a very well cut stone - not the only one available but at least it gives you a starting point!

Hi it is GIA certified but it is a diamond dossier, no plot :(. Thanks for the reply though.

I too am in the UK, and aside of the cost implications, I would not buy from the said jeweller, for their reluctance to show you where the imperfections are located.

It sounded like they were trying to fob you off in thinking you do not know much about diamonds.

Or they have insufficient expertise to be able to find the imperfections themselves.

However, your experience with this jeweller in the UK so far is not atypical IMHO, as I find high end jewellers somewhat patronising towards ordinary punters in the UK (I am in UK too). I have experienced this first hand on a number of occasions, in that their attitudes changed towards me, when I asked them to hold on to my 1.19ct E VS1 EC while I tried on one of their rings. :Up_to_something:

If I were to buy a MRB, I would import from US, or go to Diamond House in Amsterdam and buy from them again (I got my 1.19ct E VS1 EC from them).

With Diamond House, I can see and touch the stones myself before making a purchase, and Rob van Beurden and his team are lovely, and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

However, I am sufficiently confident in buying a MRB without seeing it person from the likes of Whiteflash, Good Old Gold, Brian Gavin Diamonds and James Allen, as they provide sufficient information and images for their stones to enable me to make an informed choice.

Good luck with your purchase, whatever you decide.

DK :))

Thanks for the input DK. It's nice to see someone else over here struggling (in a nice way lol). I think I am going to go the US route.

Do they not have a microscope in the store? It's true that inclusions in VS2's can sometimes be a little tough to spot but saying that it's 'hard to find' isn't really much of an excuse.

FWIW, this normally wouldn't be part of the setting decision even after you find it. The prongs are going to cover something on the edge, and that makes for a strategic decision, but usually it has to do with making sure NOT to obscure the girdle inscription.

I think they probably do have a microscope but they are just not willing to go and get it and show me lol. Either way I've decided against buying from here, going to go with the US option. Thanks for the input.
