hey there is the ammonia based cleaning dipping solutions the jewelry stores sell is it safe for use on 14k gold that is rhodium plated? I am seeing some brownish tarnish like marks on one side of my piece when i tilt the piece at a certain angle, and im wondering if the ammonia caused that in anyway or if it is something else that causes it to show when i tilt piece at an angle only on one side of the piece

Amonia should not bother your rhodium plating. Sometimes solder can oxidize and that may be the cause of the brownish spots that you are seeing. You should have your jeweler look at the cross if thats the case it can ususally be polished out quickly.

thx e, others told me ammonia can bother the rhodium plating if done too much, also what do you mean that solder oxidized and thats causing brown mark? its on the side of thepiece at an angle not at a corner

Hmmm, I''ve havent heard of amonia discoloring rhodium plating no matter how often you clean the cross.

Oxidation of solder is only one possibility. It doesnt sound like a likely place for soldering, but not impossible. Sometimes the rhodium plating itself can look "spotted" if not done properly.

cool thanks for the info, and whats the best way to store pendants to prevent it from constant cleaning? I suppose not to have it laying exposed all day? in a drawer perhaps or would that be too dusty?
