Americans in Germany

I have a couple of American friends who have just moved to Germany for a couple of years for academic jobs in Berlin. I''d like to send them a housewarming present, maybe something they''re going to end up missing from the States. They''re both vegetarians, and they both like to cook.

If you live or lived in Germany, are there foods that were difficult to buy? (maybe ethnic foods?) Did you ever get a really good care package? What did you miss most?
