A professional photographer caught this by accident.
To see the pic in stunning full resolution go to his website.

At full resolution you can see the stars are not dots; they are all short lines, all parallel and at the exact same angle.
That means his camera's shutter was open long enough for the earth under him rotate.

You can tell the blurring of the stars wasn't from the camera moving because the focus of the houses at the bottom is still razor sharp.

Spectacular!

Is that Superman landing on earth from Krypton? :D lol

Nice pic, though - must have been a decent camera/lens combo, and/or decent processing.

IME even just an 8-second exposure can be enough to show star/earth movement - it's quite annoying  lol

Gorgeous!

I have almost no experience in astrophotography, but I'm sure you're right.

The fix is an equatorial mount for your tripod.
, while the earth below it rotates, motors slowly move the camera so it remains pointed at one point in the sky.

But of course for the above pic, everything on earth would blur.

That is amazing! Thanks for sharing!!!

Cool, cool, cool.

I'm glad I'm not the only one here who finds this very cool, simple, yet complex , stuff!

My in laws live in remote rural Australia where they live has a number of some of the largest telescopes and observatories in Australia. My father in law has done this cool thing where you can take your own camera attach it to a really big telescope worth more than any average person could afford to or want to buy and take photos of the night sky with it. He has taken some really cool looking photos....

Oh, Arkie ... how very cool!!!!
