Hi Everyone !

I purchased my diamond from JA a while ago with help of many nice people here !!!. and had it set in a solitaire platinum ring at a local jeweller.
The ring is stunning.... but there are few places i am not totally happy with.. like one side, there was a bump, not totally symmetric, stone moves a bit inside the setting. Also it doesn''t flush well with wedding band !.

I have to confess I have excellent attention in details, having previously worked on graphics,.. It does bother me . I went back a couple of times, and i could feel they are a bit fed up with me going there every few days ( well, i can''t see the jeweller, not that i love to go back all the time). Well... they said, it''s hand-made ring, it can''t be perfect, bla bla bla....

just wanna a second opinion, Am i really picky, want everything absolutely perfect

How many times do you guys go back to jeweller after the setting is done ?

Now today, I notice the stone still moves a bit inside the setting ( it was fixed once, still ), and i have to go back again on Monday for 4th time i guess.

Thanks again !

The stone should not move in the setting Gemma, go back again.

Yep, absolutely agree. There''s no excuse for that, handmade or not.

I think so too !!..
I hate it when i could move the diamond around, it makes me feel it very unsecure, will go back on Monday, and hopefully they can fix it asap.. and also there are few bubbles, like some dots on the side of the ring, it''s quite obvious ( well to me ), but it''s not explosed outside, will get both them in one go then.

Fingers crossed, that will be LAST TIME, i absolutely hate their ''oh..not her again'' that type of facial expression when they see me !.

Try not to let that bother you, you have every right to expect your stone to be set securely, moving in the setting is not acceptable.

I am the type of customer that if I have a problem and I am not being taken seriously I raise my voice a little bit at a time till they make me happy. I will speak really loudly if I have to. Especially if there are other customers in the store.

Ditto, it will also cut into the prongs as the diamond is harder than the prongs and movement will act like a saw, sooner or later weaken the prongs and you know what happen then. Get that fix.

Hi Gemma,
I agree with the others. You''re not picky. You are a paying customer thus you should be satisfied with your purchase. Intimidate them back by saying how going back to their store all the time is a total inconvenient to you. Hope that helps!

I totally understand. You are not being too picky!

Usually when a diamond is moving in the setting, even after being tightened again, it means that the prongs are incorrectly notched. In order to remedy this properly, a new head is called for with correct notching.

Jeweler''s hate to do this, because they''re losing money, but that''s their problem.

You might consider showing the ring to a good diamond setter to ask his opinion.

I agree with everyone. That is not right, have them fix it. That would make me very nervous. Hope they take care of you without a hassle.

Thanks to you all for your kind advice !.

I will go back to the jeweller, and talk to them again tomorrow !
I do get really upset and sick of it after times and times of going back, and having to see their impatient face again and again.

Good luck. :)

Here's my opinion.

You get 'that face' you say: I can tell from your expression that you aren't pleased to see me again about this issue. And I just want to say that I'm not really pleased to be here again. I don't enjoy this. But I do have standards, I am a paying customer, and my standards are not being met. So if you do not want to deal with this again your options are: Get it right this time, so I won't have to come back in for this issue and we will both be happy. You will retain me as a customer and I will get the item I paid for in the condition I expect it to be. Or: Refund me the full price for the setting, and I will leave. You will not have to deal with me again, or this issue. And I will no longer patronize your store. I am happy to find a jeweler elsewhere that has the skills and the customer service philosophy I expect. Please chose one of these options and let's be done with it. If you chose to fix the ring and upon inspection once the repair is complete, if I am not happy: I will expect a full refund.

You can say it nicer than that, of course. Especially if you have had previous positive experiences with the shop. But that's basically what you shoudl do... and make sure you are addressing either an owner or a manager or someone with true authority. And if they chose to repair, make sure you speak to the bench jeweler yourself if they have one in house.

Tritto !
Will update my news tomorrow !..
.. Fingers crossed.

i think that you are being picky, but not too picky. i think that they should fix the problem so that it sits flush with your band. as far as the diamond goes i would go back everyday if i had to until it was secure.

went to the shop yesterday.. .. and explained the situation to the jeweller, and he said, no problem, i will fix it.

Taht''s it. truely quick style, the whole conversation lasted no more than 20 seconds. seriously.,

.. will be back again shortly to pick it up.
To be honest, i have been really fed up with my experience with them.
They did charge very cheap ( comparable to others on the hatton garden ) for the setting, but still, next time, i really don''t mind paying a few hundred more to have a piece of mind, to save my previous time and energy

well... suppose, you do get what you pay for, right ?

.. will update shortly.. somehow i dno''t feel good.. have a bad feeling.

..
truly hope it wll be my last time ever to step in that shop !''

Yes, pretty much. It''s not just an old saying....

That said, I hope everything goes well Gemma. Let us know.

Back..

so far so good.. Looks like fixed.
The jeweller said, he pushed the progs quite down this time, and it should be fixed, shouldn''t be moving anymore.
found some gel kind of fluid around..
wondering what that is
1) they wouldn''t put glue, could they ?
2) they wouldn''t damange my stone, right ?...... withe progs ? shall I get it checked with appraisal ?
how could i check ?

.. will see how it goes.

Thanks aagain.. guys.
really hope, dont'' need to go back again.

I have no idea what the "gel" could be. Does it feel sticky?

no idea.. it's all washed off now.
36.gif

will see how long does it last

I do trust him when he said he pushed down the progs, guessing the Gel is used in the process ?
:-)

We had an old engagement ring ( which we actually got married with )..it's got massive sentimental meaning for me. they are the only jeweller who's bothered (well, they own a workshop downstairs) to alter it to a wedding band for us at labour fee ( 1.5hr = £60 ). It's a splendid job !....I am very very grateful for this - as it's massive massive meaning for us.

Oh good! I hope everything continues to go well Gemma!

Good luck, hope nothing goes wrong again and you can finally enjoy your ring. :)

Gel is not part of the setting process in my experience, but hey maybe they do things different in the U.K.

Ditto on getting Gypsy to represent me the next time I have a consumer related issue! Wow! Awesome!

I''ve sat with bench-side with bench jewelers (called that because they sit at a bench I guess) who take an hour to set a stone and others who can set a stone in three minutes and both styles of setting reflect an appropriate price point. The old adage, you get what you pay for is definitely applicable to the labor spent to properly set a diamond... The guy who sets a stone in three minutes didn''t take much time to ensure that the cuts into the head are even and symmetrical, nor did he take the time to pre-polish the head before setting the stone - so the gaps between the edge of the diamond and the prongs are going to look kind of big and uneven and there is going to be a lot of metal bleed off visible on the prongs. The guy who took an hour to set the stone bothered to take the crown / pavilion angle into consideration and selected a burr which was in the same range so that the prongs will set more evenly upon the surface of the diamond and he spent some time whizzing off the metal that bled off the prongs while he was cutting the seat for the stone so that there is less of it... One set job cost $15.00 and the other cost $55.00 but the cost of an unhappy client, having to dismount a stone, replace a head, and set the stone (properly) all over again cost what?

I hope this time works for you GemmaEdet! Hey maybe "the look" is "man, we still don''t know how to set a stone"

Gemma I glad it appears to have worked out!

As for all of the comments about me respresenting you. ROFLMAO. To the consumers who made that comment: sure. To the vendors that made that comment: Sure, but ...admit it, if I call you for a job you're all gonna be screening your calls and going OMG! It's GYPSY... Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! *

You have to understand that I work with vendors all day long-- and I'm the 'bad guy' that gets called in when there is a problem. My job is to clarify expectations, to define a clear path to resolution for problems, and to make sure that if, after an attempted resolution there are still problems my company can get their money back. It bleeds over into my personal life. So I can be a difficult customer But, on the other hand vendors always know where they stand with me. Blessing or curse, I don't know.
