No. It goes stale faster if you keep it in the fridge.

Or so I''ve been told....

We tried this!

One loaf in the fridge, one outside. The one outside tasted better, but went hard faster.

It will dry out faster in the fridge, but will last longer.

On the 2nd day I won''t eat it fresh but am happy to still toast it, so then I put it in the fridge, and then the freezer after about 4 days. It''s still fine for toasting out of the freezer in an emergency.

My mom stores bread in the fridge. It tastes bad.
We store bread in the bread box. Sure it may go bad if you don''t eat it right away... so maybe I''m wasteful... but man, I''d rather eat soft bread while its good, than have not spoiled bread last longer but still taste bad..........

you are supposed to do whatever you''d like.

i prefer it room temp.

I don''t put it in the fridge - if I have to store it longer than it will sit on the counter I put it in the freezer. Personally I don''t prefer that either, but I like it better than in the fridge.

I agree that keeping it out is much tastier.

Keep it out, it tastes better.

If I think I won''t go through a whole loaf of bread in a week, I keep 1/2 out and freeze the other 1/2. Bread freezes very well and doesn''t taste stale after it thaws out.

I keep mine in the freezer.

me too. We buy bread that we just don''t use right away, so instaed we take it out as we need it. Leaving it out for a few minutes lets it thaw and it tastes great.

The only bread we don''t freeze is the bread I''m planning to have with dinner - like french bread or ciabatta used for garlic bread.

We buy two kind of bread:

The organic flourless whole grain bread, which is sold in the freezer section. We keep that in the freezer and take out slices as needed.
Regular bread. . .sourdough or wheat. We keep that on the counter.

ETA - Dh and kids all eat sandwiches daily and we go through a loaf of bread every 2-3 days so there is no chance of it going stale. I'm the only one who eats the flourless and it's not the most tasty from the freezer. . .it's just healthy. I have one slice every morning.

You''re not supposed to keep it in the fridge because it stales faster. I find a bread box or dark cool pantry keeps the bread the freshest.

Ditto

Last week Sheldon, from The Big Bang Theory, provided the reason for why bread should not be stored in the refrigerator. It''s because the sugar in the bread becomes brittle, thus changing the texture.

Personally I put my bread in the fridge all the time because I''m the only one who eats it and so it takes forever to go through a loaf. I really really dislike frozen bread and given the reason above, there shouldn''t be a difference between the two texturally. The sugar is still getting cold. Perhaps the taste issue is due to refrigerator smells?

We keep our bread in the fridge because it seems to last longer than if we leave it out.

lunchtime!!

We have a space issue in our kitchen so it goes in the fridge. It also seems to last longer that way. Growing up we kept it in a bread box. I think it tastes better that way but alas I dream of a big kitchen.

I''m with you, HH. Everyone else I know swears it needs to be frozen and not refrigerated, but I"ve been refrigerating bread for years and don''t have any issues.

Sheldon knows everything!

I looove fresh white bread that is at room temp.. mmmmmmmmm

It''s too humid in summer to leave it out, so we put it in the fridge so it doesn''t get moldy. If we''re going to be making sandwiches often, it can stay out, but normally we don''t eat it fast enough.

I keep mine in the fridge.. It does get a little hard but I microwave it for about 10 seconds if I''m eating it right away and it''s good as new. I think this is better than throwing out moldy bread every week or so.. If I take a sandwich to work it sits in the fridge all day in my lunchbox anyways.. I''ve ever noticed a bad taste though!

+1

I don't know about "supposed" but we keep ours in the fridge... sometimes. It depends on how quickly we seem to go through the loaf. I hate, hate, HATE throwing food away because we let it spoil

Another Question: Do you throw out a whole loaf of bread if you see mold growing on one slice? Or do you just remove that slice? OR- do you just remove the moldy portion of that slice?

(My father is notorious for the last of these)
