Yesterday I went back to the jeweler (Smyth Jewelers) that we got my engagement ring from. They are locally owned, and by far the jeweler with the best reputation in Maryland. They have a HUGE store on a main road very close to us and I have loved working with them for everything so far. They've all been really nice and accommodating helping to ensure that I get the wedding band that's right for me. i've also really wanted to stick with them because they have a really great satisfaction guaranteed policy (you can return something up to 100 days later, no questions asked) and they will polish, check, rhodium plate, etc. jewelry purchased through them for life.

When we went to them to pick out wedding rings the first time there really wasn't anything that I liked that went well with my band. I have a channel set half-eternity setting for my engagement ring. None of the diamond rings worked for me and they have a really small plain band selection. I really thought that I wanted a plain band but they didn't have any that were the right thickness nor did they have any that were not rounded (flat is really all that would work with my e-ring). So we ordered the "matching" half-eternity band sight unseen.

Fast forward 2 weeks later, it comes in and I don't love it. The diamonds don't match up from the band to the e-ring setting (and this is supposed to match?) and I knew it would drive me nuts forever. So we decided to go the eternity route. The sales lady was extremely helpful and helped me pick an eternity band. In the back of my mind I still thought that I wanted a plain band, but since they didn't have anything I was crazy about and I didn't want to go with another risk of getting something I didn't like, I decided to just go with the eternity band.

I get the eternity band home and I decide that it's really NOT for me and I really should have just done a plain band to begin with. So I bought a 2mm flat titanium band from Amazon for $5. It came in and it was perfect. This is exactly what I've wanted all along. Smyth let me return the eternity band and I asked them if I could look at plain bands.

I showed them the titanium one and said that I really just wanted something just like that in white gold. The sales lady that I got this time was really short with me and all but said that I was insane. The rings that she was showing me were maybe 1mm in depth (the amount that it sits off the hand) and my e-ring is closer to 2. How does this look right together? She really couldn't understand why I wanted it to look like a matching set and why I wanted them to sit flush together and for the w-band to stick out just as much as the e-ring on the sides of my finger/have the same height. She actually got so frustrated with me that she grabbed someone else to help.

This girl saw exactly what I was talking about and is sending the titanium band to their vendor to make a mold of it and create the exact ring in white gold.

But really, why is this so hard? They don't make commission, so they shouldn't really care on a personal level that I'm returning a $1,600 ring for a plain white gold one. And why is it so hard to understand that I want to be happy with my set? I am going to be the one who has to live with it forever, not her. Am I right? I'm starting to feel crazy. FI insists that there's nothing wrong with what I did and that he wants me to be happy with it, no matter how long that takes, but the way that lady acted towards me just really got under my skin.

Thanks for reading my long vent <3

You should get exactly what you want. Maybe she was a having a bad day. Perhaps she'd just dealt with the most difficult and unreasonable person on the planet and you were getting the tail end of her frustrations. What you want isn't unreasonable.

Maybe the sales lady thought at that point there was nothing she could do to make you happy yet you wanted to exhaust more options at their expense. It probably costs them at least some shipping costs with all those returns. I don't think you're crazy and if they did not treat you graciously then go elsewhere in the future but it sounds like they are going to make you exactly what you want which is fabulous. You might visit Radcliffe jewelers in Towson, I hear they are good.

Very true about the shipping costs, and I am excited that they're sending out the titanium band and I'll get the exact one in white gold. I'm just not thrilled about the attitude that I got on the way there :-/

I haven't checked out Radcliffe before! They're not far from my parents' shop. I should do that. Thanks for the suggestion! :) Are you from this area too?

mrs - I'd shrug it off as a bad day. You're getting a band you want and that's exciting!

I don't think you're crazy, that salesperson treated you very unprofessionally. There's no excuse for the way she treated you. You weren't asking for anything unreasonable. You bought an expensive item with them (ering), and sound like a devoted customer. So you changed your mind. There's nothing wrong with that. You're the customer, their goal should be to make you happy with your purchase. As for shipping costs, isn't that the price of doing business? If shipping costs were the problem she should have discussed it with you instead of being rude and obnoxious and making you uncomfortable. I've worked in retail and there were days I didn't want to get out of bed, but I pulled myself up, dragged myself to the store, slapped on a happy face and treated customers with respect because that was my job.

she probably thought you were one of those customers that is impossible to please, at least she paired you up with the right salesperson.
