am i making a good decision

i just need some input on the purchase im about to make

plans are to set it in a setting similar to the classic tiffany (a custom "replica" of the head), but instead of the band being plain it is a pave style the whole way around, 2MM wide. size 6.5 band.

I color
excellent cut
excellent polish
excellent symmetry
table 59.0
depth 61.7
thin-med girdle
all specs are from the GIA report but i dont have a copy handy so thats all the info i have

it shines in the dark, the jeweler is praising the cut constantly...which it is beautiful... but am i making a mistake with I color in white gold.

Ive only seen it loose and had a few minutes to lay it like this ^ with the table down on white paper and compare the I to an E and i could detect a yellowish tint when they were right next to eachother. But everyone is telling me I am overly obsessing over the I color... am i making a good move or being paranoid because im making such a large...and scary purchase

Hi Dave

Can you get the crown and pavilion angles from the GIA report please? Those two values are essential along with the diameter, also the star and lower girdle facet percentages would be useful too but the angles are the thing.

A reliably graded I colour can be fine in WG and I am not surprised you saw some warmth unmounted next to an E colour, however an I colour is still a white diamond and perfectly respectable colour choice. You won't be concerned with an unmounted pavilion view on a white paper comparison next to an E colour anyway so concentrate on the face up view more but get the above mentioned info when you can and we can go from there.

i think i can see color better than most... i do graphic design and photo editing on the side, so i acquired a fine eye along the way


i did forget to mention that it is a 4 prong head not a 6.

That sounds promising but the angles are really essential if we are to tell you anything about the cut, see if you can contact the jeweller and ask them.

ETA - yes you could also get the report # from the jeweller as Jet mentions but the only other info we need are the angles really so whatever is easiest for you.

You could also just get the GIA report number and post it here. We then can look up the data/angles/etc. off the report using GIA's report verification.

i left a VM this morning, but he does not open for a few hours.

if the cut checks out (which i think it will) in all honesty how is an I color VS2 mounted in white gold.... will i regret it in the future? or am i being paranoid and "seeing color in my head" as i stare at it looking for a slight tint

If an I colour isn't what we call ' mind clean' for you then maybe look at some H or better colours. I can tell you an I colour is a perfectly respectable choice but if you really prefer a higher colour as part of your package then I would see what else is out there. Yes you could try popping it in a setting to see how it looks but if you are leery of an I colour then it still might prey on your mind, we see this a lot. If you aren't comfortable then don't try to talk yourself into it, as I say an I colour is a very respectable choice but if for a diamond to be ' mind clean' to you needs a higher colour, then maybe compare it with some H or better and see what you think. Also do any comparisons away from any bright store lights, these can be incredibly deceptive, ideally you would check the diamonds etc out in plain daylight if practical to get the best idea.

Dave, I think the only way to tell if ask him to show you the stone with a white gold setting. Sit with it for awhile, take the stone and the setting into different lighting, see how you feel. You won''t be able to judge how unaccepably or acceptably yellow the stone is in a white gold setting without *seeing* them together.
