I feel kind of insane even posting this, but here goes…

I was just browsing and I saw this stunning, gorgeous, really just unspeakably beautiful outfit that I want to wear for my wedding reception. I tried it on as a lark and I swear I almost cried. It fit me like a dream and even the sales lady seemed wowed by the way she spoke and looked. It was NOT cheap but it was about what I expected/am comfortable spending on a reception outfit (in India there’s little distinction between bridal and non-bridal, so it’s not like I set out to look for bridal clothing lol).

Here’s the crazy part: I’m not even engaged (yet). The earliest this reception can take place is a year from today, and more likely 1.5 years from today. The outfit will take 3-4 months to be ready. I know that the right, smart and sensible thing to do is to wait until I’m at least engaged before buying it; but at the same time - I know. I am convinced that I am 10000000% going to wear this.

Would it be truly insane to just buy it already and keep it in storage??

I am speaking as a person who would be multiple items of the same clothing once I find something that fit me that I like.

If you are certain you will wear it, and more importantly, your weight and figure is sufficiently stable and not likely to change in 1.5 years' time, then go for it I'd say.

DK :))

I’ll be the odd one out and say hold off.
I know exactly one woman who didn’t either lose a ton of weight or gain a fair bit before her wedding. And alterations can get up there in cost, especially on complex clothing.

Buy it!!! Absolutely gorgeous!

Besides... It is spreading the cost of all the beautiful outfits over a longer period of time so that it really makes it easier later.

:lol::lol: I love that reasoning!

BUY IT!!! Droooooool it’s amazing! I bought my wedding dress before I was even engaged hahahahhahha

Oh that makes me feel so much better since this is exactly what I’m doing! Did you regret buying it earlier / have any issues with fitting etc.? How much in advance did you buy?

Omg that is such a lovely outfit, and your SO sounds sweet and supportive

thank you!!!
Eh buy it. The way you describe it - you clearly have fallen in love with it. IMO you have to grab things in life that you feel that way about :)

I have already decided to buy it :D really the question was when to buy. I was driving myself mad about the possibility of not being able to get it later but after reading the first lot of replies I called them yesterday to ask about availability to order. They said that it can actually be ordered pretty much any time and won’t be discontinued as such, but when I pressed and asked about mid-next year they were like don’t worry, definitely before June-July next year there’s no problem at all. So my plan was to revisit in April next year and order it then!

Thank you for the reply! I’m 100% certain that I will wear it, and my weight/figure have been fairly stable for a while so I’m not too worried on that score. I am fairly conscientious about staying within a specific range! But that’s also why I’m delaying ordering it now that I found out that’s an option, on the off chance my weight changes. I’ll be ordering it in April now, which gives me delivery about ten months to a year in advance at the max.

Actually about 25% of the voters agree with you! The alterations part was my big concern from the start, despite my weight being stable (as a couple of people asked). I really don’t expect my weight to change much for the wedding - I am fairly slim so I can’t see myself losing that much weight, and I definitely can’t afford to gain when my stomach is basically going to hang out all day!! Luckily the lehenga will not really require alterations, just the blouse. Though I would ideally not want to need anything other than minor corrections. They usually alter up and down two sizes without cost in most Indian clothing designer stores for the first year or so of your purchase; so the money isn’t the concern, but I don’t think it’s good for the outfit.

so my plan is to hold out about 4 months, which will bring me to a year/14 months max away from the reception. I think that will be fairly safe from an ordering POV!

@AllAboardTheBlingTrain , The dress is gorgeous!!! If you love it BUY IT. I didn’t buy the wedding dress I fell in love with. I still think about that gorgeous dress once in a while 30 years later.

Thank you for weighing in! If you don’t mind me asking why did you not buy the dress you fell in love with??

I only have gained 5lbs in the last 12 years and I knew my weight was not going to fluctuate. It was a great option for me since I knew my budget wasn’t going to change and I wasn’t going to change my mind :) I bought it a year before!

Ooh a year before puts me right at my planned timeline of waiting till April to order! I think I’m going to do this as well! Thank you!!

My husband and I were paying for our wedding and were buying a home at the same time. I was very practical when I was younger and bought a dress that was less expensive. I was overwhelmed at how much money we were spending on everything.

I stopped at a bridal boutique shortly after getting engaged. I picked a few dresses to try on quickly. The sales woman brought a dress in the room that had just arrived that she thought would look beautiful on me. She asked if I would try it on even though it didn’t look like dresses I had picked out. Two other sales women wanted to see the dress too. I tried it on first. As soon as I looked in the mirror I was stunned and knew no other dress would ever top this dress. The women asked “why would you try another dress on?”

@AllAboardTheBlingTrain, Just reading what you wrote I think you feel the same way about this beautiful dress. If you do, PLEASE get this dress. You will never regret it. The dress is gorgeous!!!

i apologize for the long post.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! Not a long post at all (or at least, it didn’t feel long to read) :D I do feel like if I let it go I’ll probably regret it. I’ve been thinking it over, like, do I love it enough that when the time comes I won’t even be tempted to look again? Do I maybe want the same style in a different colour? But every time I look at this picture my heart skips a beat. I don’t think I could beat the way I felt when I put it on. It was… magical. And I made sure it was in budget too - the last time I fell hard for a dress on a mannequin (not this one, at a different designer), it was nearly nineteen thousand dollars!!! That’s like, more than I am willing to spend on engagement, mehendi, sangeet, wedding and reception combined!!! So I refused to even try it on.

I am 99.9999999% going to get it (but I’ll wait to order it, so that I don’t feel quite so insane. It’s full price either way, so I don’t think it makes a difference if I wait).

Buy it, buy it, buy it. From the way you write, I think you are someone who knows if something is for you when you see it. You know, I had the opportunity to buy some really nice stones when I started on PS and I still kick myself for not buying them because prices are so high now.

I would just say to order extra fabric and have the outfit made loose so you can tailor it to fit when you have the date planned.

Thank you!! I have always tried to be disciplined and organised but this one time it bit me in the behind - someone was liquidating a gorgeous emerald and diamond ring that would’ve been out of my budget if it wasn’t preloved, and I hesitated for too long (despite having the money for it because it felt wrong to “just buy it”)… and when I went back for it it was gone :( so I don’t want to miss out on something either!

Indian wear comes with the ability to add two sizes as standard, and I don’t anticipate gaining more than 4 inches. So ordering extra fabric is not necessary, but I want to avoid tailoring/final fitting for as long as possible because it’s not good for the fabric (delicate and fully embroidered and beaded). This is why I am planning to order in April, but I’m 100% sure that it is the outfit for me!

Yes you should, or you will not be at peace over it. I also love Indian dresses, it is beautiful!
