This is my first time buying a diamond. I was just wondering if I am getting a fair deal. The diamond is 0.74 ct, H, SI1, and VG cut. The price is $3,000. Thanks in advance. I really appreciate any insight.

question number 1, does it have a GIA or AGS report?

Yes, it has a GIA report.

I couldn't get any diamonds when I plugged those parameters into the PS diamond search....

Maybe it is a good deal - did you try and compare with an online vendor? Is it an RB?

Could you please give us the info on your GIA report. The cut of a diamond affects the price.

Yes, we need the numbers off the cert. Generally it is much better to get excellent cut, because excellent is a very broad range as it is.

Here is the #: 5111921063. It is 0.74 ct..

Stats

Depth: 62.6%
Table: 59%
Crown Angle: 35.0°
Crown Height: 14.5%
Pavilion Angle: 40.8°
Pavilion Depth: 43.0%
Star Length: 50%
Lower Half: 80%
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick, Faceted (5.0%)
Culet: None

Angles are okay. It may have decent light performance. can your vendor provide you with images? Specifically and ideal-scope image.

Have to add diameter...the 62.6 depth is a red flag that the stone may face up too small. 5.69-5.75

You need to stick with GIA excellent or AGS Ideal cut. I would not buy a stone that looks smaller than it should for it's weight.

http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/9376/ This one that farmer gal posted only costs a little more, is ideal cut, and 5.83-5.84mm in diameter. MUCH better choice.

Thank you very much. I have a setting in mind from a local jeweler, will they be willing to work with me if I bring a diamond in?

The worst thing to EVER say is that you bought a stone online. But most jewelers should want to sell a setting even if they can't sell the diamond. Is it a specific setting you want (custom or brand)? It is easier to get the stone set by whoever you buy the diamond from, but certainly people do buy diamonds and have them set locally.

yes,if your purchasing the setting from them then they will set the diamond. Beware though, they will NOT take responsibility for the diamond if something were to happen to it during the setting process ie chip or crack. You will need to ask whoever will be insuring your diamond if they will cover it during the setting process.

I would purchase the diamond from whoever it is you find the setting from. Not sure who carries SimonG designs tho. You could contact Goodoldgold.com and see if they carry it. Or IDjewelryonline.com.

Just to give you feedback on your last option at Solomon, it is again too deep. Good Old Gold carries tons of setting, I'm sure they can get you the same setting that you want. As Dancing Fire has said this is a very beautiful diamond at very competitive price, plus it comes with their Lifetime Guarantee. I would call them and reserve the diamond if you are interested.

The last stone you posted isn't likely to have great performance and again it's depth is a concern. Ideally it's best to have depth of 60-62.3, more than that and the diamond starts to look smaller from the face up position.

Are you not interested in the diamond from GOG?

I am very interested in the diamond from GOG. I called them today and they are going to see if they can get the setting I requested. For my price-point it appears as if I am not going to find a better price for a RB as stunning as this one. Does that sound about right?

You have done well on that diamond, mccutcheon, and if they can get you the setting as well, excellent purchase. IMO! Better diamond than your original selection.

Many people find GH graded stones an excellent value because when the stone is set, it is extremely difficult to differentiate it from a DEF graded stone. I'd don't think that you will ever look at the H and think that it looks anything other than white, but like DF said, only YOU can decide that, but me....I'd buy the H. ;)

Btw, the H faces up slightly larger. The D is a beautiful stone too - I can't remember how much it was, looks like you have it on hold? It went on sale the same day my stone did! :)
