Nope. I dont have a smart phone, and dont plan on getting one. I actually am anti-technology...expect for my laptop, and some days i hate it. Let me explain, while many people i know, feel they must have a high tech phone that does everything and has all the bells and whistles, i dont. I bought my cell phone about 3 years ago, and it is more than enough for me. I paid cash for it, and i am actually on a pre-paid plan. Why might you ask, because i do not need another expense, or bill. I have more than enough, and if i can just load money on my phone and keep on going than its best for me. I turn my phone on when im in the car, in case of an emergncy, and if im going somewhere to meet someone. If i want to talk on the phone, that is why i have a house line. Also, i do not need to be plugged into the net all the time, and i dont need everyone being able to get ahold of me, all the time. If i want to take a picture, ill use my camera, if i want to send someone a message, ill email them or send them a letter.
All of my friends say im the oldest young person they know, because i refuse to pay a cell phone bill, refuse to get the newest iphone at 400 bucks, and i refuse to get caught up in all the tech stuff. Why, because A) I dont need it B) I dont want it C) i personally feel its a waste of money, and people start to become dependent on those things. For example, C's Best Friends Wife, is plugged into the net all the time. She works with computers all day at home, than signs off, to sign on to her personal computer, and than lays down in bed with her Ipad. Seriously...she is on, all the time. The Woman doesnt even know how to pick up a normal book and read it. Hell, she doesnt know what a libary is.I tease her all the time, and say i hope that the whole dang thing crashes, and people have to go back to a simpler way of life. Sorry PS'ers, i like you all, but some days i do.
Honestly, when i have kids, i will not allow them to get sucked into all the "need" for technology such as Iphones, GPS,Ipad,Ereaders, i want my child to be able to communicate with a person face to face. I want my child to be able to pick up a normal book, and read it, and find it in a libary( Call numbers anyone?),or better yet, i want my child to be able to sit down and write a letter to someone, address it, put a stamp on it and mail it.Also, i will not make an extra bill for myself, because usually, the parents are paying for the childs cell phone bill. When the little bastard( Just kidding) can get a job and pay for it by himself, without me signing, he can have it, but until than, im sorry, but no.
A few months back, i read an article along the lines of " Are Our are children stupid,or nincompoo's" or something of that nature. The author gives an example of how, her child and her childs friends, do not know how to address a letter( something super easy and simple), also, they did not know how to write a check or know how to cook an easy meal( Friggin A), the child actually looked up on her Iphone how to do it(O hell), while the current generation, and even people in general are smarter, they are stupid in a way. Yes, people know how to do all these great things on their phones, can turn things on in the house, and can connect to millions of people in a few clicks, but cant do simple things. Such as address a letter, cook an easy and simple meal, know how to cook dang hot dogs( C's Friends Wife), or look in a map for directions. I for one, will not be one of those people, and neither will my children.

Think about it, when was the last time you address a letter, or wrote out a check to pay a bill. I do it monthly, but C and I are the only ones we know who do. Hell, my mom doesnt even do it anymore.

( Sorry for the long post and Rant, this subject just makes me so angry!!! )

Interesting perspective, and I don't think you're alone in it. I'm also technology resistant. I didn't get a blackberry for a long time in my job, even though I got hints that I should from my management. I just didn't want to be that tied to it. I didn't even want a camera on my phone when they first came out.

I think I read the article you're talking about...but technology is part of life. Lots of "simple" things have become obsolete because you simply don't have to do them. TGuy did not know how to write a check before he moved to the U.S. He simply, in his 33 years didn't HAVE to. That didn't make him dumb...that just made him savvy for what he had to do in this day and age.

I'll teach Amelia to do a lot of those basic things (I mean, who knew that knowing how to read a map is now probably considered wildnerness survival?") But I can't ask her to do things that I never now do myself. I do think some things like GPS makes you kind of dumber...reading maps, learning how to drive with one eye on the directions, etc probably exercises your brain a lot more...but it probably causes more accidents too!

Do they even use the call number system in a library anymore? I mean, it's probably still there, but I envision just typing in the name of a book, and it tells you what aisle, what row and what numbered space or something like that. Plus I never got the dewey thingie system anyway...I hated learning about it, and haven't had to use it in 25+ years.

I agree about TGirl, but i just personally feel things are out of control. Also, my libary still uses call numbers, and i still find books by call numbers. I also understand that technology is part of life, but at what point is it too much. Thats my question, i mean people can scan barcodes on their phones, and than try and find the best price. What happen to just shopping around. Also, what about just taking a picture of a check, and deposting it later, which i think is the chase thing. Or even, the just taping your credit card, and not even swipping it, what happens when companies, feel that just implanting a microchip under the skin is safest when it comes to fraud, and convience. Are all the generations, and tech savvy people going to get that. What will become of cash and coins?

YES, they use the call system!!! I helped at my kids' school in the library and we still use the call system. Before I could help out, I was given the dewie decimal system test to be sure I wouldn't mix all the books up ;)[/quote]

I think at some point, I'll resist (like getting chipped). But hey, the government always knows where you are if you have a phone - my brother is a cop, and has worked SWAT, and now narcotics, and he said the technology is CRAZY. They can listen in on you even with your phone OFF. I mean, actually BUG you without planting anything. We're chipped and we don't even know it.

But techology is part of life. I'm sure when electricity happened, some people bitched that kids these days didn't know how to make a candle and prep a wick. I, for one, am very happy that if I am curious about a subject, I don't have to go out of my way to the library to learn it...that I can hop online and look at a wealth of information. And I hate checks, so no problems there.

And I don't see what's wrong with scanning barcodes...why is it better to "find" the right price? I don't want to be calling 100 different stores or god forbid, driving to all of them! And looking on the Internet is as much "cheating" as the barcode thing!

Did you ever see Idiocracy? In the movie, all the citizens in the US (or world?) have barcodes and it's illegal to not have one. The movie, itself is really silly/stupid, so I'm not recommending it unless you're up for that and can handle a lot of swearing, etc., (and I just double checked and some call it a "ranchy comedy," lol - but just pointing out that some do see our future being as such where we are tagged. I do think something like that WILL eventually happen.

I guess my biggest upset when it comes to the technology and smart phones and barcode things, is because it is cheating...people dont put forth the same amount of effort. While yes, the net is good, and you can find, like you said, a good wealth of information, which is great, in some areas people are putting forth the same amount of effort. Its an effort thing, and a when does it become too much, issue thing for myself. I always question, when will be too much, i know personally, its way too much already, at least for myself.

TGal - can a person still take the battery out of their phone to protect themselves from tapping and/or being GPS tracked or whatever else is being done? lol

Yeah, if you look on Netflix, it has great reviews, but about every 7th person complains that it sucks. Like I said, though, the movie has A LOT of swearing and probably offensive stuff to many. I thought it was funny but I knew what I was getting into when watching it. lol

I haven't seen the IBM commercials. We don't have cable :) lol We stream movies through Netflix into our blue ray. I haven't seen a commercial in six months!

Cheating implies it's something we shouldn't be doing. Is it cheating then, to use an icemaker vs freezing our own cubes?

I agree that what it does is potentially make us lazier as a society. However,I'd say technology has always been doing that in many aspects...but it also makes us more efficient (which isn't always a good thing, but you know what I mean.)

I have a smart phone and LOVE IT.

I find it super annoying that my non-smart phone owner friends will say things like,

"Can you look this up on your phone?" "can I borrow your phone to check my facebook/ email/ bank account?"
me, "That's why you need a smart phone!"
them, "That's why I have you."

People do that with my ipad too. But mostly with my iphone. Leeches. :D

OMG...i know a few people like that. It makes me so angry, and i agree that as a society as a whole, we are dumber. I have always had that standpoint, and always will.

Also, i make my own ice cubes still. I have the freezer that makes it, but i like to use bottle water to make my ice cubes, but than again im just weird.

Bottled water to make ice cubes???

As an iphone user, I am glad I have it. I always am looking things up (easier to do if DH and I have a debate on words or facts or whatever).
Not being able to figure out how much 2.5lbs of 69 cent/lb bananas are seems to be something other than an iphone issue though

YOU aren't dumb, but your phone is. Not smartphone = dumbphone.

Just kidding, of course! And a little plug for Android...I big puffy heart my Motorola Droid!

Me too me too!!! My Droid is freakin awesome!!!!!!!

I have a smart phone and so far, I don't get it. Sure, I can surf the net and download apps that are entertaining, but this phone most certainly isn't changing my life. I had great hopes for incredible apps that would make my life as a SAHM much more organized and productive. I found..not much. Actually, things like the grocery list apps, etc, were more difficult to use than just writing things down.

Then I think, maybe I'm not finding the right app for the right job? These apps have almost five stars...am I missing something?

My 5 year old son does love angry birds. He also loves the light saber app, the guitar app, super mario bros, etc... I feel like I'm paying this extra money per month to keep him entertained, mostly.

Uh, seriously, all this talk about how "evil" technology and advancement is? Really? Go back and read some of your posts - do you see how you sound? For those of you that are holding on with a death grip to how "things used to be" ... for what? Do you use a calculator? Do you use a remote control to change channels? A snowblower instead of a shovel? Do you drive a car instead of ride a horse to work? Get over it, hand written letters are a thing of the past, as is the horse and buggy and dentistry without anesthesia. Anyone that holds on to old technologies and "hates" technological advancement has issues - it's about more than the technology, I urge you to explore with a therapist what it is you are really afraid of. :cheeky: "Things" are NOT going back to how they "used to be", they never have.

Give me one reason why writing a check is in ANY way "better" than swiping a debit card? How? Waste of paper, waste of my time!

Your children WILL use computers and WILL be reading books from a computer screen, if you deny them of learning the latest technology to succeed and expect them to live and compete in modern society - you are doing them a disservice.

As far as the android vs. iPhone is better stuff, I don't get it, so silly.

If I were a SAHM, I don't think this thing would be lifechanging. Heck, I need it for business and it's not lifechanging either! What it does is do my business communication fine, plus add some fun things that can keep me connected and entertained more easily on the road. I like the weather widget so I can add destinations and check them with an easy touch, all in one place in one hit. It also allows me to use personal email much more effectively so I don't mix it with my work email, but it's on one device (I hated the way blackberry did it). For work, I put everything in outlook and sync it. For personal (like grocery shopping), I still use paper and pencil...but I don't write a check for my groceries. ::)

waterlilly, agree on the android/iphone thing. Lest I didn't make myself clear, I think BOTH platforms are great...it's just what one prefers.

That was kind of rude.... Still love ya though.

No, you're not. I have one (it's a relatively stupid one) but I think the main "smart" thing a phone does (at least for me) is stores a list of people you call, so that stays with your phone, and you can use it to call anyone at anytime without having to find their number, but most (all?) phones do that now.

We have "luddites" amongst us. They once protested the loom and rebelled against the industrial revolution and now are "opposed" to "new technologies in general."

So, what you're saying is I should get a job, then my smart phone would have more use in my life!

In my son's kindergarten class, they don't use a chalkboard or even a white board. They now have a giant computer monitor where the teacher can write, surf the net, run programs, etc, all with a special pen. It's called a promethium board. It's pretty amazing.

My kids' school uses smart boards, which if I read correctly is by touch whereas the promethium board is by pen.

I'm saying that I think SAHMs are amazing and usually are organized and efficient enough that a smartphone does nothing for them. :rodent:

Well, I'm a SAHM and will admit that I still make handwritten lists. About half the time, I make my lists while driving down the road. lol (Yeah, I swerve all over the middle line to make sure I don't forget to buy bread or go to the bank.) I still put all my appointments on a regular calendar hanging on the wall. As a very visual person, I have to see the entire month at a time and some sort of gadget list would confuse me.
