Don't have one either. Don't especially want one. My cell phone makes phone calls, period. I may get some kind of iPhone -- saw a GPS computer chip ($29!) you can put on your dog's collar that will send its location to your phone, great in case of a Siberian Great Escape. They go so far so fast, people often lose them for good. Otherwise, I just don't care.

My whole family has iPhones and we love the features; the GPS maps which track us as we drive toward whatever destination we've typed in. It's great for travel too, we can stand on a corner in a strange city and type in pizza, it will find us and lay down dots for all the nearby pizza places. Each dot is clickable and it leads to the name, address and website of the pizza place. We can click on the chosen dot and it will give us map directions as well as written turn-by-turn directions. You can type in whatever you are looking for and it will find it for you, and take you there.

We love the facetime on the new iPhone 4 phones. We can see and talk to someone else with the same phone.

I take all my photos with the phone, they are pretty high resolution and very handy to have a camera at all times.

From the app store, we have purchased games for as little as 99 cents or gotten them free. You can watch TV shows, store and listen to music, use it as an alarm clock or kitchen timer (put the roast in, go out for a walk), listen to countless radio stations, check your email, surf the internet (check out pricescope!), get weather updates and automatic alerts for dangerous weather, get updates on flight arrivals/departures, calendars that will alert you to birthdays and anniversaries, etc., etc. There are literally thousands of applications on the iTunes store and there is something for Everything and the vast majority are free. More and more stores and retailers are offering apps that will alert you to sales and send you coupons that the cashier will scan off your phone.

There is a new thing coming out; it's a square squiggly bar code that companies will print on ads or signs. You take a photo of the bar code and your camera will automatically read it and take you to the website that belongs to that ad. Amazing technology!

The android phones only do a tiny portion of these things, it's basically a glorified web browser. IPhone apps are sometimes adapted for Androids, but they are shadows of their former selves. There are some great existing apps similar to that new squiggly bar code thing - where you can scan the barcodes of any product and it will show you where to buy them near you at the cheapest price, or take you to ebay listings for that product! I have a couple, one is called "red dot" I think...have to look and see what the other is, free apps. Just do a search for "shopping" in the app store and they will pop up...so cool!
I am a new convert to apple technology, and I am blown away by the ease of use and endless functions these little devices have! I am 100% hooked!

There is a cool app I recently discovered - access to police scanners around the world and in every state here in the US. I don't know why, but I find it fascinating listening to that, especially the busy cities like Chicago, NYC, etc. some crazy stuff going on out there...

Until you actually have one and discover how useful they are, you don't think you'd want or use one. BUT, once you start using it and have access to the entire online world and multiple useful devices all in one little pocket sized package (it is a phone, gps, computer, camera, tv, radio, etc. etc.) it is pretty much a done deal and you won't want to go back

Exactly as Waterlilly said. Until you find the usefullness of "advanced" phones, you will be content with what you have. My previous phone was just a standard flip phone and I upgraded to a Pantech Ease, which has a touch screen and then a pull-out keyboard with LARGE texting keys (not a smart phone, but close!). It was very useful during the summer when DH was gone and we mostly commuted via text and the keyboard is realistically sized.

Now, I won't switch back. The only thing is our bill, because we also have internet, is pretty high. I just found out my phone has GPS capabilities but I'd have to pay $5 extra a month and at some point, it's gotta stop, so I won't pay for that.

The only downside to the touch screen is sometimes I send a text to the wrong person! lol

I also take all my pictures with my phone and then send them as media to my email account and save them from there. Drives my DH nuts b/c he wants me to use our real camera! lol My phone takes great photos, but horrible close up ones, so our regular digital is better for macro shots.

Yeah, oddly enough, what I won't pay for is texting. My data plan includes GPS, which is fantastic! But it doesn't include texting, which would be a separate fee ($5 for 250 texts per month, I think). Instead, I signed up for Google Voice and told all my friends to send texts to my GV number instead of my Verizon number. It integrates most seamlessly with Android phones, but there's an app for iPhone and Blackberry too. It's also a way to get visual voice mail with transcriptions for free. The transcriptions can be forwarded to your email, so it's helpful when I'm at work and have access to email but no phone reception.

I have an unlimited text and data package. Plus I get 6000 minutes a month to same network phones so that's how I keep in touch with my FI who lives 150 miles away.

But, I guess it totally depends, if you aren't one to use a lot of technology now then you wont use it if you have it all in one place on one device either.

I just recently switched from an iphone to android, and I have to say, I don't think this is entirely true. I have all the same games/apps that I had before (same quality too), and verizon provides MUCH faster internet than att did, in my area anyway. I have service in far more places than I did before, and I still have GPS. One that talks to you, for free, at that. Now, there are times that I miss things like itunes for organizing my music for me, but I can live without that, considering everything I gained by switching to verizon (lower bill, faster internet, more reliable servive...).

Let me explain, while many people i know, feel they must have a high tech phone that does everything and has all the bells and whistles, i dont. I bought my cell phone about 3 years ago, and it is more than enough for me. I paid cash for it, and i am actually on a pre-paid plan. Why might you ask, because i do not need another expense, or bill. I have more than enough, and if i can just load money on my phone and keep on going than its best for me. I turn my phone on when im in the car, in case of an emergncy, and if im going somewhere to meet someone. If i want to talk on the phone, that is why i have a house line. Also, i do not need to be plugged into the net all the time, and i dont need everyone being able to get ahold of me, all the time. If i want to take a picture, ill use my camera, if i want to send someone a message, ill email them or send them a letter.
All of my friends say im the oldest young person they know, because i refuse to pay a cell phone bill, refuse to get the newest iphone at 400 bucks, and i refuse to get caught up in all the tech stuff. Why, because A) I dont need it B) I dont want it C) i personally feel its a waste of money, and people start to become dependent on those things. For example, C's Best Friends Wife, is plugged into the net all the time. She works with computers all day at home, than signs off, to sign on to her personal computer, and than lays down in bed with her Ipad. Seriously...she is on, all the time. The Woman doesnt even know how to pick up a normal book and read it. Hell, she doesnt know what a libary is.I tease her all the time, and say i hope that the whole dang thing crashes, and people have to go back to a simpler way of life. Sorry PS'ers, i like you all, but some days i do.
Honestly, when i have kids, i will not allow them to get sucked into all the "need" for technology such as Iphones, GPS,Ipad,Ereaders, i want my child to be able to communicate with a person face to face. I want my child to be able to pick up a normal book, and read it, and find it in a libary( Call numbers anyone?),or better yet, i want my child to be able to sit down and write a letter to someone, address it, put a stamp on it and mail it.Also, i will not make an extra bill for myself, because usually, the parents are paying for the childs cell phone bill. When the little bastard( Just kidding) can get a job and pay for it by himself, without me signing, he can have it, but until than, im sorry, but no.

The author gives an example of how, her child and her childs friends, do not know how to address a letter( something super easy and simple), also, they did not know how to write a check or know how to cook an easy meal( Friggin A), the child actually looked up on her Iphone how to do it(O hell), while the current generation, and even people in general are smarter, they are stupid in a way. Yes, people know how to do all these great things on their phones, can turn things on in the house, and can connect to millions of people in a few clicks, but cant do simple things. Such as address a letter, cook an easy and simple meal, know how to cook dang hot dogs( C's Friends Wife), or look in a map for directions. I for one, will not be one of those people, and neither will my children.

Think about it, when was the last time you address a letter, or wrote out a check to pay a bill. I do it monthly, but C and I are the only ones we know who do. Hell, my mom doesnt even do it anymore.

+1 for the iPhone! I was a very Blackberry user for 3 years and could NOT imagine not having the qwerty keyboard and I was just loyal to the brand, period. However, I was tired of travelling with a phone, a GPS, and a laptop so I reluctantly switched to the iPhone (secretly telling myself that I am only giving it 2 weeks and if I was not happy, I would switch back to the BB).

But now? Cant imagine how I had gone all these years without an iPhone! Its just one of those things that you never knew you needed till you had one

A "tiny" portion? Not. But mac-heads tend to be pretty diehard. Android is very powerful, very customizable (depending on carrier, but that is a carrier limitation, not android!) and not subject to the autocracy of Apple. Android is very fast, especially on the new 4G. Apparently the HTC phone unveiled at CES is mind blowing. There is a nice selection android phones out there, some better than others. Every Android phone I've seen has GPS and I never run wifi on mine because I see no difference when I tested vs 3G. And mine is (sadly) on 1.6 (Sony Xperia) vs the 2.2. Not only that, Android outsold iPhone as a platform last year. Apple makes good product - trailblazing, I think. But their ego is legendary (and it filters down to their staff). Android is a newer platform, but the strategy of opening it up vs only allowing iPhones to the WORST U.S. carrier (AT&T) has cause them to catch up and I think it will surpass very soon. I have a couple of friends who have made the switch with no regrets. I still think overall Apple tends to make more elegant products, with Android under the mercy of the phone manufacturer and carrier - that can be both a benefit and disadvantage.

AND, angry birds is free on Android, whereas I believe you have to pay on iPhone. In fact, there are MORE free apps on Android vs iPhone - I read an article that it's over 50% free vs iPhone's 25%, but I'd have to check the latest stats. And let's face it...some of those apps are lame. I believe when I read the news (before I had Android), it was nearing 150,000 apps vs apple's 250,000? I don't think most of us care about those remaining 100,000, but if you want the subway App for Seoul, Korea, go for it (it's on Android too, actually...)

I've known about Android, but I'd always been a blackberry diehard. The story is that for work, blackberry is solid and won't let you down. However, I had the opportunity to try out a new phone for work and chose Android over the newer blackberrys (which would have been just an upgrade for smaller size, not OS). My goodness, I don't think I'll ever go to Blackberry again. At first, I didn't think I liked it, but there is SO MUCH you can do with Android. I don't game or do a lot of "entertainment" things on my phone, but Android is awesome if you have a gmail account, and the application for work email is just as effective as blackberry. I hated the stock keyboard on my Xperia X10, so I found a way to sideload the HTC keyboard, which I LOVE (damn AT&T doesn't even let you sideload!) In fact, I would say if you're going Android, stay AWAY from AT&T. They are evil with the iPhone and evil with Android as well. I have no choice but to take AT&T due to work.

Basically, the scoop is the iPhone is great if you are a tech-phobe. Any soccer mom can jump in easily into it. I read somewhere that iPhone is great for the "tech -idiot" (their words, not mine) but that can be a good thing because there is a bit of a learning curve to the Android and someone who has only had a "regular" phone would find it a bit overwhelming with widgets, etc. But oh man, once you have it figured it, wow. I've been playing with my phone for 4 days now and I keep finding out the things I can do with it with it comes to customization, just even with basic things.

So bottom line, if you're a Apple lover and don't mind "what Steve Jobs gives you" (like itunes, etc), iPhone is great! If you like to see what's out there, research, and compare, Android is fantastic.


P.S., I was wrong..looked it up real quick. Android is at 200,000 apps. I seriously don't even want to know what some of them are.

Just scan the item in the store you're in and Amazon will bring it up and the option to buy. A couple of clicks and it's at my door in 2 days with a nice cost savings. Boy, it's be tough to be in the brick and mortar business these days.................

Interesting perspective, and I don't think you're alone in it. I'm also technology resistant. I didn't get a blackberry for a long time in my job, even though I got hints that I should from my management. I just didn't want to be that tied to it. I didn't even want a camera on my phone when they first came out.

I think I read the article you're talking about...but technology is part of life. Lots of "simple" things have become obsolete because you simply don't have to do them. TGuy did not know how to write a check before he moved to the U.S. He simply, in his 33 years didn't HAVE to. That didn't make him dumb...that just made him savvy for what he had to do in this day and age.

I'll teach Amelia to do a lot of those basic things (I mean, who knew that knowing how to read a map is now probably considered wildnerness survival?") But I can't ask her to do things that I never now do myself. I do think some things like GPS makes you kind of dumber...reading maps, learning how to drive with one eye on the directions, etc probably exercises your brain a lot more...but it probably causes more accidents too!

Do they even use the call number system in a library anymore? I mean, it's probably still there, but I envision just typing in the name of a book, and it tells you what aisle, what row and what numbered space or something like that. Plus I never got the dewey thingie system anyway...I hated learning about it, and haven't had to use it in 25+ years.

Kids HAVE to know how to use many gadgets these days. Others may not agree, and that is fine, but my kids got their first computer before elementary and guess what? In *Kindergarten* they began taking tests on computers. They read books and were given tests to gauge comprehension, so it's not like technology has replaced their reading and enjoyment for books. It's just enhanced the current form of teaching/assessing childrens' reading level. In fact my kids LOVE to read and each have their own library card. Still they do know all about how to work computers, set up gaming systems (like my elementary-age son knows how to install programs). If they didn't know this stuff, they would be behind-the-times compared to all their classmates and that is NOT fair to them or the teacher(s), para-educator(s), and librarian(s) who would have to spend extra time teaching my kids what all the other children already know.

I'm proud to say both my kids know how to log onto our library web site and put books on hold all by themselves.

YES, they use the call system!!! I helped at my kids' school in the library and we still use the call system. Before I could help out, I was given the dewie decimal system test to be sure I wouldn't mix all the books up
