Hey all,

New to the forum here, but it seems like the most active and supportive place as far as diamonds go. My story goes a little like this: I''ve been on the warpath shopping for an engagement ring for my fiancee to be. She''s given me some ideas and a ring size, but totally left the purchase up to me, saying she''d like to be surprised. I set out a budget of $10-15k for myself (she doesn''t know this), which is probably on the high end for someone my age, but she means the world to me and I would love nothing more than to give her a goregous diamond. I narrowed my choices down to ~1 ct, ideal or H&A cut round in either a platinum solitare or something similarly elegant and classy (key here is not too busy). I''ve been working with a jeweler at the mall here, but they''re only a chain in the sense that they have a few local stores. After seeing a bunch of stones and having different ones shipped in over the past few months, we agreed on a price and I essentially made the purchase today (financed half through them at 0%, paid cash for the other half).

Here are the specs:

AGS
1.01 ct
cut grade 0,0,0
G
VVS2
Ideal polish
Ideal symmetry

This stone has a ton of sparkle....absolutely beautiful. Problem is after all the negotiation I could possibly get to, I agreed to a price of $13250 including a platinum tiffany-style solitare setting. I know this is much higher htan I would see online, but I can''t stand the possiblity of not seeing the stone before buying it.

I''m having second thoughts about this. I''m in the perfect location to drive two hours south into NYC, but I''m intimidated by the thought of the diamond district, and I''m not sure how I could verify what I''m getting. I have a good idea of what prices should be but I have no eye for what to really look for so I''d need to trust this person. I was also considering having the stone set by Mark Morrell who is highly touted on this board. I''m dead center between New York and Mark, so I could feasable handle both portions of this purchase in person. Anyone here think I can feasably get a good deal on a loose stone and have it set by Mark for less than or equal to the price I''m paying? How can I be confident or find a dealer in NYC that I can trust?

Please, don''t let me make a fool of myself!

DM

Here's what I found, on the low end for a 1.01, Angara had it for 8141.
On the higher end, a Whiteflash ACA 1.05 for 9696. (the ACA is bound to be gorgeous though).
Both stones are AGS0's, G, VVS2

Depending on what Mark charges, it can be cheaper than your local guy.

Edited to add: If you're going to drive to NYC (i'm assuming you're around Hartford?), call Mark at engagement rings direct and Jon at good old gold to see if they have anything with your specs. DO NOT just wander around 47th street!!

I think that price is only half the battle...the other half is how will I find a diamond at a good price without using the web as my source? I have no desire to spend more money than I ever have before without holding it first and getting the feeling that I''m buying the right one. Can anyone recommend any dealers within a couple of hours of central CT that won''t burn me on the price for a loose stone and will ship directly to Mark? Out of state is probably better becuase of the whole sales tax situation.

You can always order a diamond, see it/hold it/touch it/smell it at your house, and if you don''t like it send it right back for another. 30 day money back guarantee at Good Old Gold and White Flash, as far as I know. Otherwise, drive to Good Old Gold since you seem to be within driving distance. Just my $0.02 to possibly save you a couple g''s.

GOG is in NY, check them out! You are lucky to be close enough to see in person!

Welcome to PS

I''d take the road trip to GOG in Long Island. Jonathon does a great job at educating the consumer and you will save $$$. Mark at ERD is also worth your time. I have bought twice from GOG and have been thrilled. I''d give them both a call and and go from there. GOG is closed on Monday''s fyi. Good luck!!

Agreed. Mark at Engagement Rings Direct is also fabulous and in the diamond district. With either place you will get great service, the ability to see your stone in person, and a fabulous stone for a great price.

Both will ship to Mark without problems.

Wow, thanks for all the quick replies!! I didn''t realize that Good Old Gold was on Long Island, looks to be about a three hour drive for me. I was considering another dealer recommended on here in the city, but they had no weekend hours, which made it impossible for me to check out when I was in town this weekend. Any other recommendations? Has anyone here worked with them?

Because you''re in CT, I''d take a weekend, go to NYC early AM and meet with Mark at ERD in NYC, then book an appt later in the day at GOG. You can go back the next day and re-view anything you really loved. Easy peasy.

Just do a search a TON of us have worked with ERD and/or GOG. We bought my ering from Mark at ERD, he is fabulous.

And Mark @ ERD will come in on a weekend to show you stones if he is available...so don''t let that deter you.

AmIAFool,

I live in north central CT, north of Hartford. My husband was very apprehensive about buying a diamond online but I coaxed him into driving down to see John at GOG on Long Island. It wasn’t that bad of a drive--about a 2.5 hour drive for us. Jon is very thorough and answered all of our questions. It was a real learning experience for us. We’ve made the trip down to GOG several times since our first visit. I strongly recommend you take the time to visit GOG--but make an appointment first! And wait until you see all the other gorgeous pieces of jewelry they have on display……yummy!!!

Good Luck!

Helen

I haven''t worked with them face to face, but I worked with Jon (Rhino on the board) at GOG, and he was top notch (as was the diamond he sold me). The whole process was very easy, and I felt very comfortable wiring a substantial amount of money across the country to someone I''ve never actually met.

I would absolutely, without hesitation, put the brakes on your current purchase and take the trip out to see Jon at GOG. Make an appointment, tell him what you are looking for, and then get ready for an amazingly valuable and educational meeting with him. He''s top notch, and has a tremendous reputation. You will not regret it. Good luck!!

I also recommended going to GOG and seeing them, I have been dealing with them through email and they are so helpful :) :)

In the meantime you can also watch the videos on their site they are quite informative :)

You spent more than you need to. I agree with others that you should check out GOG!!! They are fantastic, near you, and you can view everything in person. Not to mention they also have a fantastic upgrade policy and really know their stuff!

As far as diamonds go, I would personally recommend dropping in clarity a little bit. You can either save quite a bit of money or get a larger stone, put more money into the setting, etc. Many SI stones are eye clean and many VS1 stones are 10x loupe clean for the untrained eye. Why pay for what you can''t see anyways?

One more vote for going to GOG. You''ll get a truly unique shopping experience!

ditto with everyone else. You paid too much for the stone that you bought so I''d definitely take the trip to GOG or ERD. You''re so lucky to be so close to them!!

I have a bit of different advice than everyone else. While I''m sure Mark at Engagement Rings Direct and GOG are both good (I haven''t bought from either, so I can''t say firsthand), I would give your local jeweler another chance. The price you received is high considering how much cheaper than you can get it online. I know you said you negotiated price with the jeweler and that''s the lowest you could get, but maybe there''s some room for further negotiation. Also, since your jeweler obviously carries AGS0 stones, possibly you could get one from this jeweler with lower clarity and it will cost less money as someone else also mentioned. If you want to make the drive to someone else, that''s fine, but since you have a local jeweler that sells quality stones, you might want to make sure you''ve exhausted that avenue first.

I''m not sure this is possible, though I can certainly try. I think the biggest issue is that the jeweler I''m working for doesn''t own his business nor does he have direct ties to it. They have storefronts in a few malls and a couple of standalone stores as well, but they''re all local. I think due to their operating model, they just can''t give me the deal I''m looking for. GOG sounds like a viable alternative for me, and is especially appealing because I don''t have to fight the craziness of the actual city.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to back out of the purchase I already made? I don''t even think my purchase is finalized (and if it is they have a 30 day return policy)...should I just go in there and tell them I''ve rethought? I guess I get nervous to tell someone no, and I''d feel bad for this store to lose a sale they thought they had for sure...

Help!?!

DM

I'd make sure that the return policy is 30 days and it means RETURN, not "credit only" (you should know this before buying, right?!?), then be clear that you're going to shop around because you're seeing nicer or similar quality stones for less money. Be honest with them. Then go to GOG and ERD and bring that ring with you and compare what you got versus what you could get from either of the two above vendors. If you decide to go with a different ring, then return the one you've got as soon as possible.

ETA: I can understand someone being uncomfortable returning an expensive item BUT...you've gotta grow some cohones on this one. Seriously. If you bought an expensive car or home entertainment system or whatever, and then saw it for way less elsewhere, would you hesitate to return what you'd overpaid for? No way.

that sounds high.

The return policy is most definitely 30 days money back, no questions. Definitely not store credit. I was very deliberate about reading the policy right in front of the salesperson before actually signing anything or writing a check.

i would just go in and say you want to return. why go into reasons unless asked and even then you can just say it''s a lot of money to spend and you want to do some more research and take some more time.

I wouldn''t take possession of the ring. Just tell them you have decided to wait..which is true. You are waiting to find a better deal!

Please go see Jon at Good Old Gold (appointment). I don''t think any one in that area will have the selection of fine stones that they have at the same prices. They are 100% trustworthy. I bought my diamond by mail. I actually had them send us two to look at and chose one and sent back the other. No problems whatsoever. They also work with Mark Morrell and probably have a setting or two of his for you to see.

They have some great stones for you to consider in stock right now around $10,000. You really don''t need VVS because VS is totally eye clean. My stone is VS1 and you cannot see inclusions with a 10x loupe.

UPDATE:

Made an appointment with the good people down at Good Old Gold for the near future, and also talked to Mark Morrell about his settings. I''ll probably go to the local mall jeweler tomorrow and make a last ditch effort to get their price to my point, and if they can''t do it, I''ll be cancelling in lieu of a cheaper and more beautiful ring!! Thanks for all of the help!
