already have the setting...now what?

Hi all. I already have the setting that I LOVE, now I''m looking for a center stone. Let''s say I find it from one of the PS vendors. Then what do I do? Have them send me the stone, decide to keep it (or not), then send them back the stone with my setting for them to set it? I would be a nervous wreck with my setting in the mail! My dh bought the setting from a local jeweler who is a great guy, but is very high on loose diamonds. It seems that it would be in poor taste to ask him to set it after I bought the center stone elsewhere. Has anybody else gone through this process?

Did you buy a setting with the right size head in it? It is usually best to buy the stone first and then order the right size setting. I''d probably send the setting to the diamond vendor to set in this case. They''ll charge a setting fee, but at least they''d cover the stone while it is being set.

Oh, and many of us have done that process. The USPS registered mail has insurance up to $25,000, so it is not really that complicated to send diamonds in the mail. The worst part for me was telling the postal worker the amount of insurance I wanted on my package!

The jeweler said a 1.65 to a 1.90 would fit. Do all PS vendors set diamonds? Is this a common thing? When my dh saw this setting, he knew it was the one and bought it.

Do most PS vendors set diamonds in settings that they didn't sell? Which ones are the best at setting diamonds like this do you think?

Any of them would do it assuming they see the setting and approve it, but they will probably charge a setting fee of something like $100 to $200 (just a guess). I''ve personally bought diamonds from Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash and would recommend either of them highly. They usually have the best selection of in-house diamonds as well.

Well, let me clarify that you wouldn''t send it to one of the more virtual diamond sellers who are not known for custom settings, etc.

What setting did you get?

It''s an Eli Jewels piece with a halo and a lot of "foof". I''m looking for a RB. Good old gold has a 1.71 for around $11 that looks great...

Oh, you lucky girl! I am familiar with Eli! If you can get a 1.71 at $11k, I say go for it! Be sure to put it on hold tomorrow if you think you might want it, because there are many lurkers here shopping! (My e-ring upgrade came from GOG, too..1.63 cts.)

I love everything about the setting. It''s platinum, handmade,full of diamonds and engraving, and makes me happy every time I look at it.

If someone buys the 1.7 before I can get it, well I suppose it wasn''t meant to be....

I agree with DS, I''d find your stone and then have the setting sent to that vendor to set it, assuming it''s someone like GOG, WF, or Engagementringsdirect....i know how hard it is to ship your setting off, but USPS registered mail is the safest way to go and your ring will arrive just fine, then the vendor will fed ex or ups it back to you so it will return much quicker...

i cannot wait to see your setting once your ring is done...i bet it is just amazing!!!

I tried on one last year and it had a wonderful heavy weight to it! I actually have my eye on a couple of Eli settings now for a RHR. They are beautifully made.

And sure, there are more diamonds if that one is not meant to be yours!

I know I would have to have insurance on the setting, but would i need to get it on the diamond too before I send it? I don''t have an appraisal on the setting yet...I''m dieing to post a pic when there''s a diamond in the center.

If you send your ring to Jonathan to set, I''m pretty sure he''ll write it into the appraisal he sends with the diamond. I wouldn''t worry about insuring the setting ahead of time. It''ll be covered in transit by the postal insurance.

This is a picture of my setting (from a jeweler's website). Mine doesn't have a diamond center stone and when I get one in it, I'll have it set so it's tucked in the halo with no gap between the stone and the setting. Mine also has carving all around the ring and millegrain. Otherwise, it's identical. ha.

Oh my gosh!!! That is a magnificent ring! I now understand why you went ahead and got it! The ones I am looking at have very small center stones unfortunately...although I guess that is good since I already have my other diamond!

It would be important to send it to the diamond vendor so they could definitely make sure the stone would fit correctly.
