Hair All about wigs!!!

Ooh @missy we should start a dresses thread and post pics of our dresses! I love a good dress too! Even in winter! I can’t wait for summer! I’ve been adapting my summer dresses to wear in winter! That’s how much I love dresses.

I have 4 wigs in the post! I think I’m done. There’s not that many colours and styles left that I haven’t bought.

Plus I’ve been preoccupied with this:

Me going super blonde last weekend. In the end I went to get my ring repaired and they didn’t recognise me!

Beautiful ♥️
I don’t think I’d participate in any new threads. At least not now. For reasons I won’t go into but my close friends here understand
If you do start a thread enjoy. I’m only looking at two threads for now. Nirdi and this one

But here’s another of my favorites
I call it the ice cream dress. Shelley (bling dream) loved it and I think of her whenever I wear it

Love that you had fun with this Sparklie. That is how I started. I bought inexpensive synthetic wigs to just get used to them and never actually wore any of them out. It took me a long time to get comfortable with wearing them. If you are interested in wearing them consider medical cap wigs. They are much more comfy and not itchy. I have sensory issues and can wear my medical cap wigs no issues at all. It is a lot of fun mixing it up and wearing different colors and styles and lengths. I am enjoying it so much now whereas initially I just never thought I'd be able to comfortably wear them.

@mellowyellowgirl any new wigs arrived yet? Yesterday I wore a piece I bought last November but never wore out. It came with bangs. And it is a medical cap wig. I really love it. Very lightweight and comfy and the color is great. I thought it looked very natural.

This looks soooo natural on you! If I saw you IRL I would never think this wasn't your own natural-grown hair.

I have thick, curly hair (that I've been letting grow longer), and even with a medical cap, can't quite imagine stuffing it all inside without wild strands escaping. LOL! Or it would have to be an XL-size cap to fit my mop under.

Love your dress, too! Patterned fabric is great—and it looks like you could accessorize with pretty much any color you choose. Win!

First of all thank you very much for your kind comments. Much appreciated
Second of all yes having luscious thick hair would make it more challenging but not impossible
The question is of course, how comfortable you would be

When I first started I was very uncomfortable with the wrong wigs (the inside called the cap)
Once I found the medical wigs it was a world of difference
I have very fine (thin) curly hair so it is easier for me
I put my hair in a low pony then pin it into a bun
And put the wig on..the bun anchors it in place and keeps it from moving

I wish we lived closer as I would have you come over and let you try on my medical wigs and see what you think

Here is the best pic I have illustrating the lack of thickness of my hair
You can see how thin the ponytail width is here
So it is easy to put into a bun and put on the alternative hair
But, I have friends who have thick hair and wear wigs no problem at all
I will ask them for details if it could help you

What I love about wigs is the ease
I never wore extensions or toppers because I have sensory issues and anything tugging at my scalp is too much for me and wigs are so easy to wear. Put it on and go. Takes me less than a minute and I am ready. Absolutely no pressure on the scalp

As for dresses thank you. I love dresses because one they are super easy to wear. P put it on a dress the look is already finished without a million other accessorizing etc and I find dresses very cool temperature wise and I am not a fan of the heat so in summer they are perfect. For me. Dress and sneakers or shoes...No stockings (ever...since the 80s lol and they were torture to wear). You are probably too young to remember pantyhose but OMG they were (for me) torture devices. I cannot believe I wore them through the 80s and into the 90s. Just wow. Now my legs are bare and there is no comparison

OK that is quite enough from me this morning lol. I did not plan on writing a book
Have a great weekend @SparklieBug and @mellowyellowgirl

What got me thinking about wigs was watching the second season of Andor. I saw an interview of one of the actors IRL. I was so surprised to see that she's blonde, when in the show she has the most natural looking red hair! I could never see anything that looked "wiggish" about it, even though the styles were sleek, and had her forehead exposed.

I googled her Andor hair (LOL!) and in the final episodes she wore three different wigs. That lead me down the rabbit hole of wigs...and here I am! I have zero reason to wear one, just that I'm curious. :D And I confess that they do fascinate me, so it fun to see how "real" people use them in daily life.

PS Thank you for the kind offer of trying your naturals out if we lived closer! That really would be fun as I'm also brunette, so the color of many of yours would suit me.

Hope your weekend is wonderful!

I’m still waiting on the two I ordered. The first one arrived and it just wasnt me at all. I think that it was too different , both in color and style, for a first wig, just too much of a change. I’m only looking at good quality synthetic, not human hair. I can’t justify that expense, since I’m just wanting a wig to play with. I’m very blessed to still have good hair at my age. I wish that I could help my friend/neighbor pick one out . I know that her hair loss bothers her, but that’s a very personal decision and she really doesn’t pay attention to hair and makeup and all the effort that goes with it.
Have any of you looked at Godivas Secret Wigs videos on YouTube? I love watching Rochelle ( I think that’s her name) .She has transformed so many ladies and helped them to regain their self confidence. I have learned so much from her videos. She looks amazing in every wig she puts on and makes it look so easy! One of the wigs I ordered is from her company. Fingers crossed!

How exciting!!!! Can’t wait to see it @jeaniefish
What kind of style did you buy?

My final three wigs arrived. I think I’m done ladies! I think I own just about every single style that I would like and can reasonably use.

They were all hits. This is a lovely reddish orangey brown in real life

IMG_1331.jpegIMG_1288.jpeg

This makes me look like a Disney Princess which is ridiculous since it was so cold I was running around in it and a puffer

IMG_1330.jpegIMG_1321.jpeg

This one I love love love. This is the one my friend ordered and I was waiting for its release on AliExpress. The real wig is way better than the one on the model. The highlights are soooo pretty in real life.

IMG_1329.jpegIMG_1301.jpeg

They ALL look beautiful on you @mellowyellowgirl. The wig colors are all gorgeous with your skin tone. You are lucky so many colors look fantastic on you. Certain colors look really bad on me. You can wear anything and look great! I too love the highlights on the last wig.

Do you know what tone you are? My friend did a colour analysis on me this week and apparently I’m a warm spring/ autumn so I’m not good with ashy shades. Doesn’t totally stop me but I won’t get an ash blonde wig or buy more ashy browns for now.

@mellowyellowgirl, I think I’m considered a cool winter. Any time I’m in the sun all I do is burn, then peel. The whole beautiful tan thing has escaped me my whole life.

Your skin tone looks great with every color. Has your sister started to wear wigs? Just watching you have so much fun with this is addicting.

I ordered a style that is close to my everyday hairstyle. It’s in a warmer color though, not the gray pictured. I’m telling myself to be patient and give it time and not to freak out and send it back the very next day! IMG_4344.jpeg

Very pretty @jeaniefish. i can’t wait to hear what you think when it arrives.

Soooooo I lied! Am a lying liar! Bought one more wig! Will show you when I receive it.

Also I had a very enlightening conversation with my little student yesterday. He told me that my straight brown wig looks so normal he can’t remember what my real hair looks like. In his mind my natural hair is that wig.

Which brings me to the question of whether I should buy a straight wig in the colour of “black tea.” This will look EXACTLY like my hair if I had masses of perfectly straight hair. My family votes no because they think I should have been born with curls and straight wigs are pointless. But there is this weird part of me that wants to buy one. Or is it just too boring??? Would I even wear it? I have that colour but in nice curls and waves. I also like blondes and reds etc and tend to be more adventurous with my hair than good ol natural black. Is there even a point to buying it?

So we have been cycling in the early mornings because it has been very hot here and then doing other things in the afternoon.

Yesterday it was so hot I wore my short hat wig. I rarely wear it but I don't know why. It's easy to wear and cool for hot days

missyshorthatwig.jpeg.png

And the day before we had a few appointments (very hot out) so I wore my first headband wig home made by my friend
What I love about this piece is it is very lightweight and the hair is very much the texture of my bio hair. It looks, IMO, to be very natural. Not perfectly smooth as that can be a dead giveaway it's a wig

Cannot wait to see your new hair Mellow and lol you are not a lying liar. We reserve the right to change our minds at any time. That is our right. right? :)

You look beautiful both ways and I'd go for it Mellow. Straight is not boring- it's just a different style for a different mood. I know I loved going between straight and curly with my bio hair. I usually went curly because that was easier..just let air dry. But straight was a different and fun look. In wigs I prefer straight just because I am naturally curly I think. It's funny we always want what we don't have :)

Love this and love the entire outfit too. Fun and sassy :kiss2:
You rock this ❤️

She’s a lot more reserved than I am so wigs are not for her. She’s trying to get her hair cut like one of my wigs and I’m all: Please just let me buy you the wig so you don’t need to style it!!!

I really want to see your wig!!! Did you end up sending it to have more hair added?

@missy how did you fare in the heat with the wigs? Did you feel hotter than if you had no wig on or was it fine? I am prepping for summer!!! It’s so hot here in summer.

LOL! @ "lying liar". Hilarious! We may change our mind when we like. :D

I would definitely say yes to having a straight-hair version of your own color, 'cause you never know when you want to just have a low-key day. Plus, they're pretty affordable, right?

@missy Your short-hair hat piece looks fab on you! You're fortunate to look great in long or short hair. Shorter hair in hot weather "looks" cooler. That's what I feel like when it's really hot—if my hair is long, I feel hotter than if it's short. Not necessarily the least bit logical....

So it has been very hot here. When we cycle I wear no alternative hair but I wear a hat or cap and helmet over my bio hair and that is perfect for me.

When we go out without the bike in this hot weather I find hat wigs to be by far the coolest. Headband wigs second coolest and full wigs the least cool. So I have been mainly wearing hat wigs this summer and my headband wigs

And guess what? LOL I made an impulse purchase yesterday. And got a new (shorter) wig.
It wont be shipped til next week so unsure when it will be arriving but here it is

I got it on a second hand site so always a risk but I have purchased from them before and so far so good
I love the color and love the style and it is a lightweight wig
It is final sale so if I don't love it I can wear it as a hat wig need be

Aww thanks. Yes shorter feels cooler to me too and I think that makes sense... because my neck is unencumbered by hair in this heat. I only have two short pieces and I will be wearing them more this summer. I have been toying with cutting my bio hair short so maybe that way I would have more of a style but I just don't know what to do yet. I like wearing my bio hair back and up and if I cut it short I won't be able to do that

Here is an example of how I wear my bio hair all the time now
It's not a style at all. Just off my face

Screen Shot 2025-07-19 at 5.49.20 AM.png

Anyway thanks for your kind words and alternative hair is fun. Never thought I would think so but I do

For all those reading if you are on the fence go for it.
It really is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it and you can be anybody you want easy peasy. :)

SOS! Help!
My synthetic wig arrived ( picture in my earlier post) and it’s so shiny that I can’t stand it! It just screams “WIG”! The mother/daughter owners of the company look so good in any wig that they put on in their videos, and so do their clients, I had high hopes for this thing, but it’s going back in the box! Are all synthetic wigs so shiny ?
Should I be considering a human hair wig instead? The prices are so much higher, understandable , I suppose. Perhaps I’ll consider a human hair topper, for a little added volume instead. Have any of you ladies ever purchased toppers or pieces from Milano Wigs ? I’ve watched several of their videos and the staff seems so nice and very caring about their customers. I wish I lived close to one of their salons.

Unfortunately yes this could be an issue with synthetic but there are things you can do

1. Spray a light mist of dry shampoo on your wig and comb it through to absorb excess oil and give it a matte finish.

2. Be sure to use shampoos, conditioners and styling products made for synthetic fibers. They’re carefully formulated to provide just enough moisture without leaving residue that can create shine.

3. Avoid Shine Serums: Steer clear of shine serums and oils, as they can amplify shine on synthetic wigs.

I never bought from Milano but definitely if you do wait for a sale. They have them a few times a year

Do you live near a major metropolitan area? You might find a quality wig store near you and you can try them on in person to see what works best for you

Hi Missy,
Thanks! Those are all very helpful tips. I am still leaning toward sending this wig back but I have another less expensive wig on the way . I may try the dry shampoo on that one , since I will likely be keeping that wig to play around with.
There is a small wig store here in my city that has been in business 20+ years and I just might heck it out. The owner offers a complete service on the wigs she sells, fitting, styling, etc. All the other stores here seem to be more beauty supply type stores. Will post again if something works out for me, or maybe even if it doesn’t! If I could look half as good in a wig as you and @mellowyellowgirl do, I’d be totally happy!

How much did you spend on it Jeanie? Because it shouldn’t shine! Mine are on average $15 after tax from China and they don’t shine at all.

Missy has given you all the shine minimising tips but I’m offended that it’s shiny at all. It shouldn’t be!!!

Speaking of shine, omg this wig offended me so much! I looked up the prices for it and the shine is horrific for the price! Love Steph though! This is a good video for tips on how to make it look less wiggy.

These were $15. Definitely no shine.

IMG_1485.jpegIMG_1268.jpeg

I’d say of all the colours, red probably has a tendency to be shinier than the other shades but shouldn’t look like the wig in the video I linked.

I spent about $250. It’s a warm toffee color, with red highlighting. I intend to return it ,since powdering it would void the return, if powder didn’t bring down the shine enough for me. But I will use Missy’s tip on the one that’s coming next, if needed. It’s a light blonde with blonde roots. It doesn’t look shiny on the web page, but neither did the other one! Buying the “right” wig is a learning process, isn’t it?
Thanks for the tips. I will definitely watch that video! Also, I love the wigs you chose. They look so much more expensive than the prices you paid!

Definitely a bit of trial and error involved. After returning 3 wigs, I know there’s a certain type of curl that makes a wig look extremely wiggy on me and I can’t tame it with heat either. It just makes my entire head look strange!

Fingers crossed your next one works out! Would you be open to trying inexpensive Amazon wigs with fringes? I’m a fan of the hard front because lace is a whole other skill that I have not learnt so hard front with a fringe works well for me.
