Wedding Alaskan Cruise Honeymoon

We are looking at getting married next spring. I started some preliminary research for a honeymoon. We would like to go on a cruise b/c my FI has never been on one before. Ideally, I wanted to go the Mayan Riviera in Mexico or the Panama Canal, but those cruises seem to be out of season when we want to go. I toyed with Med. cruise, but it’s a long flight to Europe and we are not sure if we will want a long flight after the wedding.

So, I''ve searched a bit more and it seems that Alaskan cruises are in season in the late spring. What are your thoughts on that for a honeymoon? I''ve always wanted to do an Alaskan cruise, but it never occurred to me as a honeymoon destination.

We could do an all-inclusive in Mexico, but I am not sold on that idea.

Another idea I''ve consider is having a mini-moon after the wedding, then a longer honeymoon a few months later, but I am not totally in love with that idea either.

Any suggestions???

My only thought is that Alaskan cruises are very popular with the over 65 set. It wouldn''t necessarily have a lot of young honeymooners on the ship, I don''t think. I would think there would be plenty of cruises in the late spring in warm climates.

It depends on how good you are at sitting still. Other than Victoria, all the ports looked the same and sold the same touristy crap, imo. We spent about 2/3s of the time on the boat with nothing to do. There were "classes" taught be people who know less about the subjects than I do, a casino, a game room and dumb shows every night. The food was amazing, but the drinks were terrible. Other than passing a glacier, there was nothing memorable about the scenery and we rarely saw it from where we were at see. We were one one that was more geared towards adults, which did mean 65+. The ones we saw geared towards kids seemed almost like disney boats there were so child based.

I should point out that I am VERY bad about sitting still, so being on a boat most of the time with nothing to do or see drove me up the wall.

I went on a cruise last july to Alaska with my family for my parents 30th wedding anniversary. It was the first cruise I had ever been on, but I loved it!!

We went on Holland America, which is generally thought of as an older crowd, but there were quite a few younger people on the ship. I loved Alaska, at all of the ports we went to, we just went out to the edge of the city and hiked around. We never really went shopping or stayed in the "touristy" areas. On the ship there was plenty to do for us, but my FI and I are very good at entertaining ourselves.

My parents and brother got passes to the spa so they could go hang out there whenever, but FI and I aren''t spa people.

I would definitely recommend it as a trip. I guess it depends on what you are looking for. It would be nice, in my opinion, to not be somewhere with a bunch of other couples who are on their honeymoons. Sometimes I think of those all inclusive Mexican resorts that so many people go to as like "Honeymoon factories"...and then it seems less special to me. Also, you can have plenty of alone time on the ship if you want. It is very much "go at your own pace". So you can participate a lot, or just hang out in your cabin and spend time with each other.

We did the Alaskan Cruise through Carnival I believe it was a couple years ago. I think we stopped at 4 or 5 ports along the alaskan coast and then took a train into fairbanks through Denali national park.

the scenery was beautiful, something that I will remember forever. Northern lights are AMAZING! It is a very unique place to have your honeymoon and you probably would not be with 600 other honeymoon couples...which would make it more personal. However as a couple people said above, its mostly an older crowd (65+), the ports are very toristy (sp?)

Taking a mini honeymoon and then taking a longer one later on sounds like a great idea. I heard the med cruise is amazing!! A bonus if you choose to take a longer vacation at a later date, you would be able to choose the time of year depending on your interests (and you could save a boatload of money if you go during off season)
