Has anyone dealt with Ajanta jewelers in St. Thomas? I have a coworker who bought her son''s engagement ring for his wife down there. She says several people who use them have been impressed. I feel very much like buying diamonds is like buying cars--everyone is out to screw you.

Well I dont think any of the PS vendors have that attitude otherwise Leniod would have them removed and FAST. What are you looking for in terms of settings, center stone and overall cost? If you give a little bit of information about what you are looking for we can see if we can find what you are looking for at a price you like.

My husband and I recently spent a week on the island of St Thomas. I have to tell you that Ajanta Jewelers was incredible. (I would consider myself very knowledgeable on stones). They had some very high quality stones at unbeliveable prices. We actually went there three days in a row and my husband just spoiled me rotten. Jackie is awesome to deal with! We bought a tanzanite ring there for $1500...it''s an unbelievable dark blue, almost 3 cts and has 4 nice sized diamonds...I searched when we got back here in Michigan and couldn''t find anything comparable for under $5000.00! I also bought a slide, 2 rings, and my husband surprised me with a complete set of white/blue diamonds...earrings, ring, and bangle. All in all we spent about $5000.00. The thing that really sold me on the place were all the repeat clients from the cruise ships that came through every day that we were there....one lady had been trading her tennis bracelet for a larger one every time she came and was up to 7 cts! There had to have been at least 10 repeat clients that walked through the doors during our visists. FYI... I had previously bought an unbeliveable diamond tennis bracelet on the Island of Aruba at Pearls and Gems (almost 3.5 cts high quality stones...I paid 2300 and it appraised for 4500 here in the states). Turns out Ajanta and Pearls and Gems are under the same owners. Hope all this helps your decision.

If you are going to buy diamonds from a remote location, I would rather have the recommendation of a group of people like us here rather than a bunch of "repeat" (maybe they are, maybe they aren''t) customers from a cruise ship. The people on here have a huge archive of useful info both positive and negative on any vendor from this site as well as a few others. I have heard of people who bought while on vacation and lived to regret it. caveat emptor.

If you are informed and fairly certain of what you are looking for and what it should cost, then just make sure that what you buy has a cert from a major grading lab. That way, it is easily verified by an independent appraiser. Most of those places only offer a refund if the color or clarity is off by more than two grades. That''s a problem if the stone is not accompanied by a grading document from a major lab. Then it kind of becomes he said/she said. Rarely do you get your money back when that is the situation.

This is not an indictment against the jeweler you asked about. I do not know them personally. I am just trying to give you a heads up on what you need to be aware of before you buy. If you want our help, there are plenty here who love to provide it.
