Airline or no airline

Hi all,

Would an airline look better with a halo. In the 1st pic is LaurenTP''s WF Halo. I like it for its clean lines and modern look. No airline so less gap to accumulate dirt and grim, so less cleaning needed. If I go for this, I''ll ask for a plain shank.

You will also have a different look if you have the stone bezel or prong set in a halo. I prefer the setting be without an airline, but it depends on the look you are going for. An airline increases the overalll diameter of the head. Without an airline it increases the appearance of the size of the center stone.

The 2nd pic is Bev K new setting, ts44''s engagement ring. I think this twist came abt cos her fiance asked for it. Interesting approach. I like the milgrain (love it since seeing Upgradable''s), comfortable shank, looks more romantic. But more cleaning needed. Brush too small to go between the airline to clean.

Hi Marian, what a great idea! I never think of airline causing the diamond to not appear so big yet larger diameter! Thanks for your take on it.

My ring is a prong set halo, without an airline. Hope this helps. It has milgrain around the halo and on the shank. If you would like a close up photo to show these details, let me know.

Hi Ashleigh!

Actually, that particular setting comes with the air line around the bezel. He changed the band for me to make it more comfortable.

My air line actually DOES make the center diamond look bigger. From average viewing distance (about a foot), the bezel blends into the stone. The ring the air line creates actually then fools the eye, making you think THAT is the bezel. The effect is to visually add about a mm all around the diamond, making it look larger. I will tell you that nobody believes my diamond is .81 carats, they all guess much higher.

I would say that prong-set stones with air lines generally do not make the center stone appear larger. However, as explained above, a bezel with an air line around it can indeed have that effect.

And if you are worried about dirt and grime, I can tell you for a fact that I have no trouble with the air line trapping it whatsoever. The diamond gets grimy far faster than the setting!

Really appreciate that. Ya, the twist is the more comfortable shank. I thought Bev K finally came round to making a more comfortable shank then saw your post abt your engagement. Congrats on your engagement!

Anyone else with thoughts on these 2 settings. Didn''t realise there''re so many going ons with halos till I asked for opinions. More advice is appreciated.

I've always liked Marian's halo! I really prefer the tighter/closer halos and have always liked the Singlestone halos.

They seem so dainty, which is why I think I prefer them, but I think it really comes down to personal preference.

I love the airline, but that''s why I got it! I think it makes the center stone POP. It really spot lights it. There is no problem with dirt getting in the gap. And as for what it does overall for the size.... my center stone measures 7.2mm, but with the halo and airline I have over a 12mm spread!!!

hi there, i am currently trying the achieve the ''biggest'' look. I am looking to custom make a centre halo with 2 sidestone (.40 carat, .70, .40). I would much prefer to put together a stunning ring than little pieces of diamond. Anyway , back to your question I spend quite sometime, gathering information on the different halo,. Personally, I will prefer one with NO airline and prong setting, as I think that is the setting that will create an illusion of a bigger stone, as the melees around seems to ''fuse'' into the centre stone. I am not a fan of bezel too, as I prefer prongs to ''showcase'' my diamond.
