So finally I am engaged! YAY! I went to my jeweler yesterday and we worked on our setting. When it came time to talk about the halo I expressed that I would like an air line.....he was so confused and looked at me as if he was saying "NOW WHY WOULD YOU WANT THAT???"

I always thought that an airline was more chic. My stone is a 1 ct and I want to show my stone off because its just very white and sparkly. I always thought to myself, if the halo totally encases the center stone, it would look too "busy". Like little balls surrounding a bigger ball!

Please help. What would you ladies do?

Can you post any pics of Halos with and without Air line? I am so confused to what to do now....I dont wnat it to look like the halo was meant for a larger stone, hence an air line is visible. That seems to be what my friends think when I ask them this question!

I''m sorry I don''t have any pics for ya!

Air line vs. no air line is, I guess, a choice that boils down to a couple of factors:

1. What you like

2. The nature of your stone''s light performance.

I can see where fancies might perform better with an air line type setting: they might need more light coming in from more angles to scintillate (?? please correct me if I''m wrong, PS''ers...)

A well-cut RB would still perform smashingly (is that even a word?) in a non-air line setting, because RB''s (especially nicely cut ones) have that ability to really perform beautifully, due to the cut.

What do you think of the non-airline, personally? Have you had the chance to see both on your finger yet?

I think each is pretty, but your jeweler might have some more insight into which one would make your personal stone POP!

I have a halo with an air line. I''ll post pics later on tonight when I get home. I think it depends on the style of halo that you want or what shape your diamond is. For my ring, it just looks better with it because it looks like it''s floating and the canter stone looks a little raised. But I have seen Firegodess'' ring ( i think hers is without an airline) and it also looks GORGEOUS!!! I guess either way, it would look good

go to www.artofplatinum.com. leon has a ton of pics of rings both with and without the airline. I actually have an airline halo with on my ring and i actually prefer it. to me it makes the diamond still stand out and be the focus. Of course, the tiffany legacy is one of my favorite rings and there is no airline on that setting.

While I don''t technically have an air line, my stone is set a little higher than the halo, so from some angles I do see an air line. Unless you look at my ring directly from above, you can see an airline on some sides but not others. Sometimes it bothers me a little because it looks uneven. In the picture I think you can see what I mean.

I think air lines and flush halos are just different looks and both are attractive. It would only look like the stone wasn''t big enough for the halo if the airline was very wide and not in proportion with the halo.

Flush halos make the stone look larger. An airline would define the edges of the stone as you were saying, so it might not have the exact same affect.

Here''s two pear rings with airlines:

I''d get what you want. I think air lines are cool when done well. I''m just wondering if this jeweler appreciates them??

Congrats on your engagement!!

I agree. I think they are elegant but you should stand by the design YOU want!

I was looking on LM''s site. Here''s some round stones with airlines:

I think it would look more proportional with a 1 ct than these .5 ct stones.

My setting (though I don''t have it bacause BF hasn''t proposed yet)

has an airline and holds a 2 carat oval. I actually much prefer the space between the diamond and the pave.

I tried both styles and liked the way my center stone stood out. I think it is a classy look!

Good luck with your decision!

Halo with airline around a 2.52ct stone here. I actually like the airline because I love my double prongs and think that the airline sets off the diamond from the halo a little bit, thus more emphasis on the diamond if that makes any sense! I think airline vs. no airline is another one of those individual taste things and you should go with what you like. Congratulations on your engagement!

I like the airline...simply because there is so much more to discover.

A different angle...a ray of sunshine...yeah...a ray of sunshine can have more fun playing around.

Hi there,

I have an RB halo without an airline or bezel. I have to say I am a little disappointed by how much the center stone blends in with the halo. I love the center stone and wish I could see it more clearly on its own.

Just some food for thought.

My ring has a very slight airline, which you can kind of see on the right side in this picture. I love it, it is not very obvious but allows the diamond to receive so much light. Also, it helps the diamond look a bit larger.

geez- my apologies for the obnoxiously large pic, but it def allows you to see the airline, lol

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH ladies. I do agree that sometimes the ct stone can blend in too much with the halo. I would love to have my stone stand out more as well.

Thank you for posting all your fabulous pics and links. It''s been super helpful!

Ok, please excuse my ignorance - but WTH is an air line?! Sorry, never heard of it before

Honey...

Space baby space...it is a groovy little gap between the stone and the halo...

as opposed to a bezel set that is all metal and no space.

Get with it Honey...it is groovy and happenin!

I vote for an airline too!!!

I vote for a thin air line also. I had my RB in a halo setting up until 2 weeks ago. (I re-set it in a 6 prong knife edge solitaire). Mine didn''t have an airline and I think that was the main reason why I didn''t like it and ultimately ended up changing it. I missed seeing my beautiful stone! The halo blurred the line of where my stone started and ended. An airline will give your stone the presence it deserves while still enjoying the beauty of a halo setting. I''ve done a couple of custom projects and usually my vision and the jeweler''s are different. Definitely stick to your guns on what you like! You''re the one you will wear it every day. Good luck!

I love the airline. I also designed my ring with an airline...but dont have any great pics of it.

It all comes down to what you prefer. Likewise, a jeweler will have his or her own opinion on things as well, just remember that your taste is not theirs so get what you want not what they think is correct. I think a good rule of thumb is to go with a designer who actually likes the design that you have come up with in conjunction with them. Everyone wants to make money so I''m sure anyone will do the setting for you, but I think you get the best work out of someone if they are excited about the design as well.

Just my .02 cents. I''m not an air line type of guy, but to each their own.

I never new that the space was considered an "airline"... NOw I know. Gorgeous rings everyone!

Here is a pic of my pear halo... I guess it has an "airline"....

Well... maybe not? It does have the space in between the center stone and the bezel??

Cushioncutnut I think yours is like a gold "airline". It could be a nice compromise for the op, whi will get the visual break between the stones and her center without leaving an actual "air" break. I like it!
