Can someone explain to me how a cutter is able to put AGSL xxxxxxxxxxx inscription on the diamond before it''s graded? When it says "AGSL xxxxxxxxx have been inscribed on the girdle of this diamond", it has to be there before the lab grade the stone right?

I am thinking that they got the number from a pre-cert, inscribe the stone and then send it in for a full cert?

AGS does the inscibing.
You send it in they grade it and inscribe it and note it on the cert.

there are many possibilities...the stone might have had an AGSL report already but the report was misplaced or discarded, the stone might have been bought through dealers who didn''t agree with the grade and therefore decided to discard it...

one of the things I might suggest is to go to the AGS website, and I would assume that they would be as "in line" as GIA....there is a web page that allows people to input the report number to see if there was a report made.... you could also call AGS and ask them to check into that for you....ask for a duplicate because you lost it...this costs money though....generally speaking though these larger prominent labs would go ape-@*!^ over an "illegal" Trademark inscription.....so I would look into that tooo...

as strm noted, the stone is inscribed while it is at ags.
cutter sends stone to ags for grading. they grade, then inscribe and list the incription # on the report.

...

?
AGSL is a trade mark
GIA is a trade mark.

I have first person knowledge of the trademark infringement issues because one of my friends does this laser engraving to diamonds.....A cutter can choose to write anything they want on their diamond...but, AGS/GIA will come after anyone who dares to put AGS or GIA trade mark insignia on diamonds other themselves.... BUT diamonds are generally graded first then inscribed.... UNLESS you KNOW for a fact that this stone was CUT by the person you recived it from, there is no reason why either company would inscribe a stone and not provide a report with it.

I'm glad they go after them if they use it

That helps protect consumers.

trademark is defined as:
"A word, phrase, symbol, or design, or combination thereof, that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods or services of one party from those of others. A registered trademark is a trademark the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has accepted and registered for a certain class of goods. Registered trademarks are identified with an ®."

That is the purpose of a trademark and they are required by law to protect it or they lose it.

thank you strmrdr..

I really didn''t get what belle was confused about....namely because VINA''s question was a cut an clear question from someone who is not familiar with diamonds....
Canadian diamonds will ALWAYS have the canada mark on the diamond''s girdle....inscribed with it''s own export control number, and the maple leaf of Cananda....this is ALWAYS noted on a Lab Grading Report under the comments portion.....This Canada mark is put there by Authorized Canadian Cutters to do when preparing the stone to come into the USA as Polished LOOSE Diamonds....GIA did not put it there..AGS didn''t put it there.....The only reason why a AGSL xxxxxxxxxx number would be on a girdle of a stone is if the stone had a REport....IF it is being presented without a report, Vina should look into why this is.

Canadian diamond do not always have the CanadaMark markings on the girdle. Only stones that are mined and manufactured in compliance with the CanadaMark system have it. They pay for the privlidge and less than all manufacturers choose to do this.

Both AGS and GIA sell inscription services and if it''s ordered at the same time as the lab exam, the inscription will be noted on the report. Any additional inscriptions that were present at the time of exam, such as the CanadaMark or other branding will also be noted. Marks added after the report was prepared will obviously not be listed.

I''ve had AGSL put GIA xxxxx on girdles along with the AGSL inscription. Nobody there was concerned about trademark infringement, but they did want a high-res copy of the existing GIA report.
