I am trying to help a friend buy a ring and stumbled on an AGS1 diamond with the following numbers:

1.25 carat
6.87 - 6.91 x 4.31 mm

depth: 62.6
table: 54.6
crown: 34.8
pavilion: 41
star length: 48%
Lower Girdle Length: 78%
culet: pointed

I haven''t asked for any additional information yet as I''m not sure what makes it a AGS1. The vendor says it is due to polish and symmetry being excellent, but these numbers seem, while, not ideal to me. It scores an 2.2 on the HCA.

The reason why I''m considering this stone is it is priced just below $3000 and is a nice size, but would like opinions.

Ex polish and symmetry won't get AGS0. The numbers are ok, it is a tad deep and the crown and pavilion angles definitely need an Idealscope image in order to see how it all works together, if you could request one from the vendor that would be very useful. What is the actual girdle thickness too please? The percentage is fine if you can post it.

Thanks for the reply Lorelei. I understand that without ideal polish and symmetry it can''t get an AGS0, but do you think based on the numbers that it would have if the polish and symmetry would have been ideal?

It could do.

Its good to see you Rebot!

The girdle is: Faceted, 1.5% to 4.2%

I will try to get an idealscope. I just wanted to get some opinions before I wasted my time or the vendors asking for images if everyone thought it was a dud.

That looks fine, thank you. It is one of those combos where it could be a good looking diamond or it could leak due to the angle ranges, so if it is within price range and nothing else presents itself as an option, then definitely worth getting an IS image. It is a bit deeper than I personally prefer but the main thing is how the angles and facets work together, if that checks out from IS then fine.

Chances are pretty good that it’s a lovely stone, most AGS1''s are, especially if the jewelers report is correct that the problem is that the polish & symmetry are ‘only’ excellent. Whether or not this is a deal depends on some more information. Have you seen it? Do you love it? What’s the price?

Thanks for the help.

Lorelei, thanks for the welcome back. I had a baby a while back and spend most of my time perusing the mommy forums. It is a tad deeper than what I like also, but it is for a friend that doesn''t care as long as it is beautiful.

I actually have already picked out a diamond from one of the well respected vendors, but stumbled on this one and it is the same price for .25 carat bigger and a higher color grade. I hate to say more than that because I know that lurkers (even though i am one) sometimes snatch up stones. Basically it is a 1.25 J I1 AGS1 for $3000. Based on the picture it looks great. I will contact the vendor on Monday.

CONGRATS on the baby!!! Thats wonderful news!! Get the diamond reserved pending further investigation as lurker poaching does occur here, also check very carefully that it is eyeclean to the friend's standards if you can. I would definitely get it reserved if possible as it won't be hard at all to track that one down from the details....Drp the vendor an email, they should see it.
