Hi,
I purchased a 0.91 rb E VS2 AGS000 stone and I can see a carbon naked eye inclusion from the top. I am really concerned about this as from what I have read I shoudln''t be able to see this without a loupe. Should I report this to the vendor?

Everytime I look at my lovely ring now all I see is the flaw. I thought it was safe buying a VS2 from a reputable vendor.

I am sorry to hear that! It happens sometimes, the subject of ' eyecleanliness' is so subjective, eyesights vary, sometimes a diamond may be a borderline VS2/ SI1 amongst other reasons. That is why it is so important to let the vendor know your expectations concerning whether a diamond is eyeclean so that you are both on the same page. If it bothers you that much, then I would say to change it for another diamond, you could find another VS2 is fine, or perhaps try VS1 - but above all be very clear if you don't want to see anything from any angle at close scrutiny to let the vendor know that. As to seeing the inclusion with a loupe, there are no hard and fast rules as you will discover with the thread I linked below.

Here is the thread which might help, it explains the many variations concerning the subject of an eyeclean diamond. This just proves unfortunately that VS2 isn't always eyeclean, although some assume this grade will be, there can be exceptions! But I am sure if you can't live with this diamond, you will find another which is everything you hoped!

thats the thing about grading.............people are doing it. my stone is vs2 and everyone who has ever looked at it thinks it should have been a vs1. i cant see a thing anywhere! not trying to make you feel bad but the grading can be very very inconsistent.

I bought the stone from whiteflash and although my consultant was great and went above and beyond helpfulness I am v. disappointed. It was made perfectly clear that I expected the stone to be eye-clean.

Will the fact that a flaw is easily visible from the top affect the value of the stone even though AGS have certified the stone to be a VS2?

can you return it? have you told them you arent pleased?

This may be a stupid question, but the stone has been cleaned really well recently right? Sometimes things look like inclusions and it's dirt or polishing compound if the ring has just been set. So just wanted to make sure.

have you had it cleaned?
A spot of polishing compound can look just like carbon and a good steam cleaning and its eyeclean again.

I haven''t told them yet - as I have just noticed. First thing I did was clean it and polish it hoping that it was dirt!

Is it set or unset?

have you compared the inclusions to the cert?

also--could it be a piece of something stuck somewhere and reflecting?

Hi,
It is set and the cert does show the a needle inclusion in roughly the same place as I am seeing the little dark blighter. It is near the top of the diamond.

I never thought this mind clean business would get to me. LOL!

Scottish, I'm sorry to hear you're able to see the inclusion. Does it coincide with a plotted inclusion on your grading report?

Just as some people are super-sensitive on color, some people are super-sensitive to clarity. One of my friends can spot inclusions in VS2 stones; I can't easily find them in SI2 stones. I'm guessing you're one of the super-clarity sensitive people.

The good news is you *are* safe; between our return policy and lifetime trade policies, there's no need to be disappointed with your stone. Get back in touch with your consultant and have him/her begin looking for another stone for you.

If it''s set and you haven''t done this yet, take it to a jeweler for a really good steam cleaning and to have them look at it under a loupe. An at home washing/polish won''t get off polishing compound and it''s worth a try before you send it back to WF. But they WILL make it right by you if the stone really does have a visible inclusion...

Me too.

I think the older we get the less clarity and color become issues.

Last go round my wife opted for a larger K color!

One of the good things about doing biz with reputable companies Scottish is a lifetime tradeup policy.

In such situations you''re never stuck.

If I am correct and you are in the UK please be careful how you return your stone. You must contact customs to ask them how to proceed. If you got your stone through Fedex you will (or may already have) paid the duty on it. You have to claim that back from customs yourself. Fedex will already have paid it on your behalf.

If I can advise further please let me know. I have had a problem with customs over returning a diamond before.
