AGS Platinum vs regular Diamond Quality Document - RB

Hello All,

I've found this forum/website tremendously helpful. I have a few questions I've been wondering that I'm hoping someone might know the answer to.

I've seen online retailers sell diamonds with both the "AGS Platinum Diamond Quality Document" and the "AGS Diamond Quality Document". I'm trying to understand all of the differences between these reports.

First - Why would a diamond supplier get the regular document vs the platinum document, when the platinum document has more information (I'm guessing cost of the document)?

Also - The 2 differences I can tell about the document is that the Platium document has a grade for light peformance and it also shows an ASET image of the diamond. Under the ASET image it says it is a computer generated image. I may be dense - but does this mean the ASET image is not of the actual diamond, but a computer generated approximation of what their computer model believes it looks like under an ASET? If so, do you place any real value to this image (i.e. should it be trusted?) - or should the diamond still be viewed under an ASET/idealscope viewer? Also - am I following them correctly that they use the computer generated picture to determine what the light performance rating is?

Their website says "All the detail of the Diamond Quality® Document plus the patented computer-generated Light Performance map unique to each diamond are what make the Platinum Diamond Quality® Document the ultimate grading report."

End of the day - I'm trying to determine how much/if any better is the platinum document vs the regular document.

I greatly appreciate any/all of your input with this!
Nick

You have answered the question yourself.

The Platinum Diamond Report has an additional"ASET Image", where you can see the light return of the diamond. For the other variables, they are measured the same way. And yes, the one with the additional aset image, does cost more. As a consumer, it is better to get a Platinum Diamond Report, unless you are able to use the IDEAL/ASET scopes to view the diamond.

Thanks Babyjyo.

One thing I'm still wondering - is that ASET image in the document the actual ASET image of the diamond? I am confused because they say it is a "computer generated image". I interpret that to mean a computer estimated/modeled the image based on the dimensions/proportions, but that seems somewhat useless if that's the case. Does anyone know?

Thanks again for all of the help!

It is a simulation of how the stone would look under an actual desktop ASET, it uses parameters from a scan of the stone. As such it's a helpful tool but you've got the right end of it - can't do or die by the nuances since we can't account for scanning/mechanical error, etc.

Lots of PS vendors will take an ASET photo for you through an actual ASET scope, if that's something you want.

ETA: the only difference btwn the DQD w/ ASET and the DQD without is the printed ASET simulation - the requirements for cut grade and everything else are exactly the same for the two reports. AGS has a ton of other reports, some of which do use different metrics to assign cut grades.

Thanks for your help Yssie!
