Looking at purchasing a HOF .625 F VS2 SBF round cut diamond. (SBF didn't notice any blue I might be blind)

However I wasn't provided the AGS report until putting a significant deposit. Should I be concerned about a 2006 AGS grade date? That is 8 years ago.. (I am not bothered if it was pre-owned). Should I ask them to regrade it?

I will be going there after work today and would appreciate any advice.

Thank you!

Why wouldn't he show you the report without a deposit? I've never had to do that before.

Is it from a HOF dealer? Or a private party? If the price is good I wouldn't necessarily be concerned - it is a HOF, after all. And the color won't change w time, although the clarity may have if it is damaged (chipped or scratched) externally.

SBF only shows up in UV light (direct sun or blacklight). It won't look blue under normal non-UV light.

Apparently the report is given from HOF. It only took a day so it was quick enough. However it's an upscale jewelry store and maybe assumed I wasn't a serious buyer.

The diamond itself costs $5600 and yes I know I'm paying for the name. However I'm assuming because of the SBF it was cheaper than others I compared.

So should I not worry about the date on the report?

As mentioned I worry about external damage.

I am confused...

It's an AGS report?

But it's given by HOF?

The latter statement seems to be, er, 'creative'? :?

If you are worried about damage, I would ask them to provide you with a 30x loupe so you can inspect it fully.

Watch this video from Wink Jones, owner of the PS-recommended High Performance Diamonds, to learn how to use one:

Sorry posting from my phone at lunch.

It is an ags report. However HOF or someone had the physical report on file.

Or at least that is how I understood it.

I can give the ags # on the report if that helps.

That would be an excellent idea :)

Should I request a new grade before I purchase ?

You don't necessarily need a new report (this one is a Light Perfomance document), but you at least need a copy of the original. And you do need to have it checked by a third party professional to make sure the stone is in original condition.

You seem to be aware that you are paying a stiff premium for this stone. As long as you understand that, I trust you have your reasons for being charitable.

Thank you. I will get a third party opinion.

Trust me I don't like paying a premium. But it caught her eye when I went shopping for a watch

That is a lot for a .62 stone! Have you considered posting the specs here on RT with your budget and requirements? We can help you find a great size/quality within your budget online so that you do not overpay. That is just a crazy price for those specs

That's the best possible reason for overpaying!

Maybe what you learn here will help you negotiate a better price on that stone.

That would be great. Just found this forum so I need to do research. My budget is around 8k.

How much would a normal hearts and diamonds be of same carat size and attributes ?

Thank you all very much for the help. It really is appreciated

Here are a few options worth looking at:

1.2ct, E, SI2 (verified eye-clean)
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/12077/

1.0ct, G, VS2
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/12338/

1.012ct, G, SI1
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.012-g-si1-round-diamond-ags-bl-104070749009

All of those are the same price as the stone you had linked, but are substantially larger. Performance should be similar.

You can use the search function here on the forum to get an idea of prices and compare apples to apples.
