Hi all

Regarding the diamond I''m about to purchase, in the AGS certificate''s comments section it says "Additional clouds are not shown".

My concern is whether the clouds on an SI1 diamond will make the diamond dull. Correct me if I''m wrong, I''ve read previous posts on this subject and there doesn''t seem to be any agreement regarding whether these clouds noticeably reduce the optical performance of a diamond. I think a few experts previously mentioned that the general rule is that SI1 and SI2 clouds are to be avoided?

Is there any chance that this is the case for my particular stone? (below is the AGS inclusion plot)

Hi echelon,

My understanding is, the additional clouds were not grade makers. They will not impact the performance of the stone, unless they're in an SI2, AND the grade makers in that SI2 ARE clouds. Then they might impact it.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ditto. Clouds not shown in the comments section of the report are noted for completeness and therefore are a non issue, unless they are the grade setter in a lower clarity as Ellen points out.

Hmmm sounds good. Yes it appears the clouds are not the grade setter.

Could Garry H chime in please? I think he''s one of the experts who said something about SI1 - SI2 clouds being cause to reject a stone.

Clouds not worth the time to plot are extremely unimportant features. If plotted, they would nearly always appear far more important than they actually are. It would tend to misrepresent the actual clarity of the diamond. In my office I have three special colors beyond green for external blemishes and red for internal inclusions. We use pink for faint marks and tiny clouds. We use light green for faint surface features and we use a blue color to denote any fracture filling detected. I think these additional colors give great value to what a clarity plot reveals to all end users. No one is pushing for more disclosure within the diamond trade, but it seems like a good concept which does no one any harm. I believe it does some good for those who want the best details of the clarity right in the plot drawing. Occasionally, we still find marks of such faint nature that we also make a comment about not showing them in a plot, but because we have this added layer of subtle drawing ability, we need not make the comment on such a regular basis.
