My fiance wanted a 5 stone anniversary diamond ring for an engagement ring. I went to what I thought was a reputable jeweler. He didn''t have one in his store, but said he could make anything. I don''t know much about jewelry, so I gave a general description to him and asked him to use his expertise to make a nice looking ring. I told him this was a very special time in my life. I told him I didn''t mind if he made a reasonable profit, of course, but please don''t exploit me.
After a very romantic proposal in Rome, my fiance had to go through the agony of telling me she does not like the ring. The ring looks terrible. It is a very thing ring with 5 buckets welded onto it by hand. It has large gaps (more than 1 mm) between the stones that gather dirt. It has sharp edges that dig into her fingers. The diamonds were supposed to be G, SI1, but several jewelers told me they are more like I, I1. I paid $1500 for the ring, but have found similar rings with real G, SI1 stones for under $1000. The money I lost is bad enough, but the grief this has cost me and my fiance is far worse.
The jeweler won''t take the ring back and won''t answer my emails.
I feel awful. I''m have no experience with anything like this.
What can I do?

Sorry, I''m pretty new to the board, but from the sounds of it, the most you can do is be glad that you only got taken for $1,500.

I''m sorry you are going through this, if necessary possibly you could have a new ring made from the stones from the old, by an actual reputable jeweler, even if they are lower quality than you originally thought, or you can see if you can get any money for them at all to put towards purchasing a new ring

Sorry you ended up with a poorly made ring. You haven''t said what carat weight your ring is and what it''s make out of. If you aren''t able to return it (I''d still try that route), you may want to purchase another or have the stones reset. Chances are resetting the stones will cost as much as a new ring. Whiteflash is a vendor that offers great service as well as an excellent selection of rings.

Signed Pieces is another vendor who does platinum 5 stone rings (7, 9, 11 stone rings, too).

Okay, the good news is that she didn''t say "no" right?

And you two have good enough communication that she was able to open up about her true feelings even if they were embarrasing for both of you. Moving on: if you are unable to return the ring, maybe you can pick out a new one together & have a fresh start. (If you can afford to right now).

p.s.-- the same thing happened to a friend of mine. the buckets welded onto a band with gaps in between. i don''t know if she was really unhappy with the ring but later she got a gorgeous eternity band for an anniversary & only wears that now. just mentioned this to show you that it''s not unheard of. Just unfortunate. So don''t beat yourself up too much -- you trusted the guy, you thought you were getting a custom design just for her (as my friend''s fiance did) but it didn''t turn out as lovely as you''d hoped. Make a new start & a new memory together now!

This is supposed to be a very happy time in your lives - don''t beat yourself up over this. I would call Whiteflash and discuss the situation. Good luck!
