I have seen more certfiicates (ags mostly) lately and it appears to me that the certificates on line from vendors are mostly always the newer AGS certificates and the certificates that I see from the jeweler (so far) have been about 2/3s of the old certificates. The older AGS certificates do not have the specific light listed under grade AND the older certificates also seem to carry older dates.

Any thoughts?

If you want to get an AGS0, you should probably get the new report. That way you can be sure it''s an AGS0 by the new guidelines. If you get an AGS0 with an older report, it may not be an AGS0 by the new standards.

ditto that.

i answered your query about the reason for old reports in your other thread.

AGS started issuing a new grading report in early 2005 (?) which has the light return component. So the newer reports will (generally) have this and older reports (pre 2005) will have the older style. If you have an AGS0 with the older report, you can get some idea if it would be an AGS0 under the new grading system. Use the Holloway Cut Advisor tool on the upper right of the page and if the "X" is inside the white box then there is a good chance that it could be an AGS0 in the new system. Even if it falls outside of the white box it still could be an AGS0 under the new system. But to really be an AGS0 under the new system AGS has to do some 3 dimensional modeling of the diamond for you or an appraiser with the modeling software from AGS could also do that for you.

I saw in the other thread that you were looking at an older AGS0, you can run the number in the Cut Advisor but you really need the correct numbers (ask for a cleaner fax copy). Good luck.

Unless it''s really a stone you love, go with a newer cert.

I was on the fence about old v. new too, and I''m glad I went with newer (GIA in my case), since it had the table depth, angles, etc. Better piece of mind, though a year or two really doesn''t matter with a diamond.

So what else are they going to add next year? How often are the certs updated?

I definately am on the fence about the older report. I would start looking at GIA now that I know more about diamonds, but I have to tell you that I''m worried that I do not have the number range for each (crown, pavilion, table, etc.) that I would need to stay with GIA.

nothing wrong with broading your search to GIA, just keep in mind that GIA rounds the angle''s so your not necessarily comparing apples to apples when looking at a AGS000 and a GIA ex/ex. Seriously though ally, please don''t get too caught up in the paper, dates, 3''s etc. It can really take the beauty and romance out the purchase

. I''m guessing that 1.5 with and old AGS report is gorgeous. Look I purchased and AGS O with an even older report than yours. I bought it BEFORE it even came back from being regraded b/c my vendor said it was gorgeous. I trust his eyes completely and he''s not a number guy, eyes first then certs. You''ve seen it, if your eyes love it, it''s got a AGS cert, it''s a nice stone. Take it to and independant appraiser to make sure your stone matches the cert and then get that beauty set.
