After a custom job do you get/ask the gem box back?

What if you want to unset the stone in the future?

What's normal practice?

I have gotten it back sometimes and not other times, even from the same vendor. I have started asking for it to be included in the shipment of the final product if I want it back for whatever reason.

My stone came in a gem box initially. When sending my ring to be set, I asked them before if I could keep the gem box and they gladly agreed.

Sometimes I get it back, and sometimes not. If I'm understanding the question correctly. Now I have so many gem boxes that I don't care whether it comes back or not.

I"m done over 20 projects with gemstones and I have never gotten the box back. I have also never asked for it.

I asked for mine & the vendor sent it back with the ring.

About half the time I get it back, and half the time I don't...

I actually have some empty gem boxes so I don't mind if they are not returned, but sometimes my gems are in the diamond double-paper wraps and those I really do like to have returned (and so far they've been returned about 3/4 of the time).

I've never specifically requested their return.

Hi,

I have sent some nice boxes to the lab with expensive stones and I have never received them back. AGL put my ruby in a small plastic envelope type container. I was annoyed. But i didn't request to have them back. Didn't think that was necessary. They kept my best containers. GIA kept my container as wello.

Presumably it was an opal?

I would not expect to get it back unless I asked for it in advance. If I were a goldsmith I would not have even thought to return the empty little 20 cent plastic container. If someone asked me to I would, but I would think to myself they were crazy. Unless it was a particularly nice one, like hand carved exotic wood. In that case I would wonder why they didn't transfer it to a 20 cent plastic container before sending it on to me. In the case of the stone being returned unset, as in smitcompton's ruby with agl, it absolutely should have been returned in the original packaging. In fact I would have expected that had you sent it to them in a little plastic bag, it would have been returned to you in a proper plastic case.

I always request that my gem case gets sent back as I do not have many and I'm too lazy to go get more on my own.
