Short story, my husband and I upgraded my diamond from a 1.27 to a 1.74. We had been waiting weeks for the jeweler to find us the "right diamond" within our budget. My original ring rated 1.8 on the HCA tool. The 1.74 which was picked out for us is nice, and we saw it in person but to our untrained eyes we don't know much. At the time the jeweler did not have the GIA cert...now 3 weeks later we are given it. It only rates a 4.8!!! I can't help but feel like we made the wrong decision. We paid $6k for the upgrade. Both are Triple X GIA rated stones. Here are the specs on the new ring: http://imgur.com/Wenugrn Could someone help give some insight please?

If you change your mind ask for a refund. You should always ask to see a copy of the GIA report before purchase.

I'm not sure a refund is possible. They have my old diamond and have already remade my band. :wall:

Can you exchange it for another stone? This time, make sure it passes the HCA test first.

If a straight up refund or trade back for another center stone isn't possible, then how about getting this one appraised with reflector images (IS, ASET). It looks like the PA is deep, at 41.4 (if I read the report correctly). Which kills it on the HCA. However, it can still be pretty and reflector images might help the mind clean issue. They can also run a sarin and see what AGS grade it might get, maybe AGS1 (which is still pretty good). Don't fret too much, you did see it and approved it in the first place. It must be pretty good, but got slammed on the HCA (which can be VERY harsh on deep PA). Let's wait a bit and see what the vendor can do for you while you get it appraised. Hope this works out for you in the end and you can enjoy your new sparkly.

ETA: since the PA is the only obvious issue, I wonder if this could be fixed with a recut without much weight reduction? The depth is 62% so there's some room. I don't know, but maybe you could have it assessed for this option and what the trade offs would be. It's risky though, so it's perhaps a long shot.

Why did you have to wait three weeks for the GIA report? He could have given you the report number to look up in the mean time.

What's the point of a GIA report if you get it three weeks after your purchase? This isn't your fault!

Does your diamond have that GIA number on the girdle? It matches the report?

You should tell him had the GIA report been available at time of purchase you would have made a different selection. He with held the deciding information from you for three weeks. He's the one selling a diamond with no GIA report. Stalling a return so you can't return it?

You buy something for thousands of dollars and are expected to TRUST? This is business not friendship.

Exchange or refund or small claims court!

Ditto what FancyIntense said.

41.4 on the report even with gia rounding taken into account is never good news for a RB.
It is bound to have some color entrapment and look like a lower color diamond than it should.
How much so will depend on the specifics.

Talk to your jeweler and see what your options are should you wish to change it.
I would point out the fact that you did not get shown the gia report for 3 weeks.
