Afraid that it will have a gaudy look.

Hi guys,

I am hoping you guys can offer some perspective. I am 99% committed to acquiring a round 1.35 carat, I-color, SI-2 clarity, ideal cut diamond ring for my girlfriend. It is a solitaire diamond with small diamond bits on the band on both sides. My girlfriend's ring size is 5.5; her fingers are pretty long (she is 5'9").

I have a few concerns:

1. Do you think this would be too large for her finger? She is not into the gaudy look.
2. Does the fact that this is an ideal cut make up for the I-color and SI-2 clarity?

Thank you in advance for your help.

No it's a modest look even. Not gaudy at all. As long as you keep the setting itself elegant you will be fine.

What are you calling Ideal cut? Who is calling the stone Ideal cut and what is the justification for that term. Please list the diamond's information (lab, any information on the report including specifically the table, depth, and crown and pavilion angles).

Thanks for your reply. I unfortunately do not have the angles, etc. in front of me. But it was certified by AGS as "ideal cut." Sorry I can't provide more detail at this moment.

No, I don't think that will be too gaudy at all.

Are you here in the U.S.? If so, not gaudy.

I assume you've seen the stone in person and you're sure it's eye-clean, or that any obvious inclusions are hidden by a prong, and that none of the inclusions impact the stone's integrity ?

Hi supctr213-
1. no, not at all
2. I am not an expert but knowledgeable posters on this forum would need more information. the SI-2 might be an area of concern.
If the deal is too good to be true . . . well

Hope this helps, let us know what you decide.

Gaudy??..Never heard of that word in my life... :read:

Especially without a halo, I don't think it would be too gaudy.

If the stone is eyeclean and none of the inclusions are affecting the performance OR safety of the diamond then SI2 is great. But you have to ask their gemologist about that.

As for settings. It really depends on the actual setting you chose. What setting did you have in mind? Please post a picture.
