Hello all,

This is my first time on the forums and I hope someone can help me figure this out! My gf is interested in this diamond from a jewelry store that she and her family have been going to for years. They the following:

1.29
Polish: VG
Sym: EX
Cut: EX
Color: F
Clarity: VVS2
Girdle: TH - M
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 7.14 - 7.15 * 4.18mm
Depth = 58.5%
Table = 61%
Pav angle = 41
Crown angle = 32.5
Cutlet = Very Small

All for the price of about $12,600; is this a good deal? I have not checked w/ any other diamond brokers just yet, since my gf really likes her jeweler and probably wants to get it there.

Also, I was recommended to go to IGI for an apprasial; is that a good place to get it done?

Please excuse me if I posted the same questions, I am still getting used to this forum. Thank you to all for any advice you can give me!

IGI wouldn''t be my top pick to get an appraisal. I suggest you have a look at the list of featured appraisers here on pscope. They also are regular contributors to the forum.

The stone you posted might be very nice - the table size is a tad bigger than pscope''s general taste, but it could be a very attractive one. Have you seen it personally? Were you able to compare it to a smaller tabled stone?

Is there one appraiser that is most recommended here on pscope? How come IGI is not too good of a choice?

What is the general pscope''s tastes of the table size? I saw the stone, it is very attractive and using the Cut Advisor here, it comes out at 1.4 - Excellent. My gf would rather choose quality over size; she likes it to be very shiny than very large. Is that a good price that we got?

Thank you for replying!!!

Though seems at least possible you''ve reversed depth and table, performance does work well, provisionally, either way
Pricing seems fair
But, I''d rather see you lower your requirements for clarity, unless you specifically want the VVS2. VS1 usually more than satisfies, if not SI1, and you''d save a couple thousand, based on comprables.
Finally, IGI is not mentioned here with any frequency...do a search on appraisal options. Aren''t they an appraiser of second choice for commercial purposes? Traditionally, as suggested, you''d use a local appraiser; several are well spoken of here, but where are you?

Thanks Regular Guy, maybe I did reverse the depth and table, but I copied it off the GIA certificate when I was at the store last time, so maybe I did copy it wrong. However, either way seems to be fine w/ the Cut Advisor, so makes me happy it is nice and shiny and cut right. I know a VS1 would bring down the money a bit, but my gf seems intent on getting VVS2 (either because she thinks it looks better, or would be worth more for investment purposes, who knows). But my big question is, the price seems to be good? I don''t like to get ripped off, but I guess an appraiser would confirm whether or not I get ripped off or not.

What do you mean when you said IGI is "appraiser of second choice for commercial purposes?" What''s the difference b/w them and a local appraiser? I am in NYC; thanks for the help!!!

A links...David Wolf has recently gotten good feedback.

Can anyone let me know if the asking price of my diamond ($12,600) is a good one or am I being ripped off??

Thanks to all!

A cursory look at the "Price Comparison" feature on this site shows your price to be in the general vicinity of others, albeit on the higher side. I would not call it a "deal" but it's fair and in line with other jewelers' pricing for similar stones:

Example 1
Example 2
Example 3

I am no expert, though.

I do wonder, though, if you indeed have the depth and table correct after all, because the diameter of your stone is larger than most 1.29-1.30 ctw stones I found. Perhaps it _is_ a somewhat shallow stone for its table size. I do not know if there is any implication of this, though, on the diamond's performance. I usually think if you like it's sparkle and fire, then it's a fine stone to own.

I wonder what more knowledgeable posters will think of the stone in question compared to this stone? Close in price, size, color, clarity, but it's a bit smaller--looks very nice. Anyway, just an idea.

Thanks Oleander for the response; I did my own searches before and my diamond seems to be in the general vicinity of what is offered by others but just wanted to make sure mine was good too. I could have sworn I copied the depth/table correctly from the diamond picture on the GIA certificate when I was in the store, so don''t know if I mixed the two or if I''m reading them incorrectly. However, the Cut Advisor seems to give it an EX rating, no matter which comination of the depth/table I use, so it looks to be ok. I guess the only way to really tell if my diamond is good is through the appraisal process.

Any other opinions? Thanks!
