Hi Teddy

Is this diamond from Blue Nile? If so then very difficult to tell if it is a great rock or not as BN do not supply essential images, as such all we have is a chalk outline of the stone. The table is greater than the depth also, the reverse is usually preferred. Also did you particularly want colourless VVS clarity? If so thats fine but just to let you know you could lower both to G or H colour even and VS clarity without visual sacrifice if the cut is great, but this is a personal choice.

I take it the diamond is GIA graded?

the diamond does have a GIA and a GCAL report, and yes it is from BN.
what does the table being greater than the depth do?

This can lead to a more shallow crown height which can affect production of fire or coloured light, a larger table + shallow crown height can cause reduced fire in some cases. A large table can help a diamond to look brilliant but it won''t be the best all round performer.

Here''s another diamond. A bit smaller, but this way i can get the more extravagent channel-set platinum setting that i like!

Princess Cut
Carat weight: 0.70 (0.93 incl setting rocks)
Colour: G
Clarity: VS1
Depth: 69.8%
Table: 66%
Symetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: Medium
Culet: None
Flourescence: None
L/W: 1.01
Clarity Characteristics: Crystal
Price: $3713 with setting.

to be honest, i''m more interested in feedback on this diamond than just being directed to other sites. i''ve spent a lot of time narrowing down my options to a few different diamond/setting combinations. please let me know what you think of this diamond.

We can't tell because we do not have images to see the performance. Might be good or bad, there is a lot of ways to get a princess and the only way to see how it perform is through an IS/ASET image or view it yourself, numbers will not do. Everything can be Ex and numbers falls within acceptable range and the stone still comes out as a dud.

Princess and other fancy shapes cannot be purchased based on numbers alone--there are too many variables. Numbers can be useful for eliminating stones, but not for finalizing a decision. Lorelei mentioned above about lack of images from BN. For us to comment on a stone, high quality photos and Idealscope or preferably ASET images are essential. If you want to purchase from BN, that is fine and your decision, but there is no way we can be of much help.

All I can say about the stone you have picked is that there are no red flags, but that doesn''t mean it is a good performer.

Vendors that post the necessary images include:

www.whiteflash.com

www.goodoldgold.com

www.highperformancediamonds.com

Additionally, JamesAllen, Excel Diamonds and ID Jewelry can supply them on request, but limit the number of stones to supply the images.

Hi Teddy

It could be a nice stone but we can't tell for sure without images, is this one from BN? If so and you were very interested in it, they do have a 30 day return policy so you can check it out for yourself,

Hope this helps!

Maybe we'll get more comments if we link to the stones. A photograph of the stones is available on the GCAL reports (somebody handy with photoshop might be able to isolate and enlarge them).

#1 0.74 F VVS2

#2 0.70 G VS1

I'm not an expert, especially when it comes to princess cuts, but I just like the picture of the second stone better. Plus I think you get more for your money with G VS1 than F VVS2.

As you can see for yourself on GCAL's report, only the standard characteristics are listed as criteria for selection as a Signature Ideal princess, nothing about optical performance.

If you want to buy it, sure, used the 30 days return period and get it check out with an independent appraiser.

Congrats Teddy!!

Congrats to you, Teddy!

I'd just like to clarify with respect to an earlier comment regarding our policies.

Excel Diamonds does not limit the number of stones to evaluate (and) upon request.

A customer can inquire about a selection of diamonds and we will invariably personally inspect and evaluate (upon availability etc.) each and every diamond at our own expense.

However, instead of supplying the comprehensive data and information on each one of these stones, we will "limit" the actual supplied data to the 1-3 diamonds, which we believe (and based upon the individual parameters of the customer) to be most worthy of their consideration.

The customer is not looking to purchase 10 loose diamonds etc. Rather, they are expressing interest in different options, which upon initial glance seems to be within their range. Then they will rely on us, our expertise and supplied data, to parse and weed out the top candidates from the bunch.

There is a very basic distinction between "limiting" the number of stones we are willing to evaluate (there is no limit) and the actual proccessing and dissemination of the data for those diamond(s) most worthy of consideration.

Best of luck teddy. Please come back with pics of the final product.

Judah,

Thanks for the clarification. Reread my post. That is what I was trying to get at, but maybe didn''t phrase it well enough for someone new to the board.

Jet2Ks,

No problem and thanks. You are very kind to mention us. I was simply utilizing the opportunity to offer further clarification for those who are unaware of the specificity of these (our) policies.

for anyone who is interested, it turned out beautiful and she absolutely loves it!

(If you don''t mind me asking, did you get stuck with paying any extra Duty and/or Taxes to Canada Customs, or did Bluenile add enough $$$ in at final checkout? And how quick was your shipment? I''m considering a purchase from them, and I also live in Canada

there is a rather large shipping charge that you can figure out on the website as you''re checking out. the shipping was quite quick though! due to complications at my bank, it took an extra day, but they got the money on thursday and i received it on monday! they were also very helpful answering questions about the diamond over the phone. an overall great shopping experience with them!

Thx for the quick reply, Teddy

Yes, I''ve seen that section on their website, but just wondered if in ''real life'' , BN actually does take enough to cover the CDN duty & taxes. And it would seem they do!

I''m very pleased you had such a wonderful experience with them!

All the best for a long & very happy marriage
