Advice please on Emerald Cut

I am at the start of a search for an emerald cut diamond and have been given the following two stones as options to consider.

At this point I only have the GIA reports to go by but can view both stones later this month.

Can I please have some feedback on whether either stone is worth viewing?

I'd personally rule out a 70 table. That stone would have a very small crown and a big wide flat surface in the center. The second one is deeper and actually faces up smaller than the 4.45, so be sure you are watching diameters when you compare stones.

I personally like tables of 65 or less on emerald cuts, but it might be worth taking a look at the second one, other than the price is going reflect the 5 cts. The thick girdle is probably making the stone face up smaller at least partially.

Other than that, you really need photos and videos for us to be able to give a meaningful opinion, and in fact, I'd insist on those for such an important purchase. I'd also check on prices with us before purchasing, as well.

Do you only want colorless (D-F) stones? We can take a look and see what's available, if you'd like. (It's very late where I am, so I'd have to look tomorrow.)

Nearby there is a fresh thread about choosing an emerald cut - WWW; we are talking of somethign smaller there, but the arguments about play of light, proportions are no different. Sure enough: there are many more examples of 1 ct emerald cut diamodns to show & tell ! For them, it takes some imagination to adjust details from the silly magnification and from numbers on lab reports, to real world dimensions, where fine points of Symmetry [there are some 'Good' (GIA) among the list], clarity characteristics & whatnot, will not need to be overlooked since not much will show ...

I wouldn't try to dismiss any slight detail about a 5 carat E/VS.

What I expect from a very nice Emerald cut, would be close to this: WWW . What I see in these old school Emerald cuts and also demand from modern ones is the beautiful play of light of the step facets. There should be a world of internal reflections in step cuts, old school* or new school**.

(not particularly easy to tell without showing).

It would be nice to see a few stones of different cut quality, even if smaller, just to see what is possible. Not sure where this could possiby be done on short notice (nearby: 4 cts D on a thread - the olds are Loved around here ! There are anonimous, modern Emeral cuts that do very well, however.) ...

* There are old school, historical details about those stones, that are no longer common among 'modern' style Emerald cut diamonds... On the olds, the corner side are cut deeper (so they are closer to an octagons than rectangles) and there is an easily visible facet parallel to the table (the culet, which would be mentioned as at least 'Large' on a GIA reports of such old style stones, but is not done on modern ones...).

** you may end up appreciating them for very different reasons ... That would make two of us & they'd still have us sign a disclaimer along with the voluntary request of malpractice ,-) [see what I mean ? WWW | attempted humour]

I am looking for a colourless stone and if you could direct me to some stones that are an excellent cut that would be fantastic.

I have not done any online searches but I am open to the idea of buying online as long as the Pricescope community gives the stone the thumbs up - that approval will make the purchase of a stone sight unseen less stressful.

I'd be happy to narrow down some suggestions! But I would have Jonathan at Good Old Gold call in your top contender or two from the stones below to take some video, photos, and do light return images so you can be sure to get a great stone. There will be a wide range in prices since I don't know your budget.

This stone is the one I consider the best. Nice table at 61 and nicely proportioned crown, measurements are 8.3 x 11.1 with a 1.34 ratio which is what I consider perfect for an emerald cut:

I do not know if the folks at GemConcepts deal with the public, perhaps ...

There really isn't much listed in this range and my expectations are too high !
