Hello, all.

My name is Flex, and I am from southwestern VA. My wife and I are coming up on our 20th anniversary, and I am wishing to purchase a Past, Present, Future engagement ring so that I may re-propose to this amazing woman.

I have located several nice possibilities, with one ring in particular peaking my interest. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a 'pig in a poke' since it is offered on a Craigslist ad in another state, and does not list all the specifics of the ring.
Thus, I come seeking your advice, hints, tips, and suggestions!

The information that I have obtained on the ring is as follows:
It was originally purchased from Kay Jewelers several months ago, is like-new in the box, and is AGS certified as having 3 round non-enhanced stones at 3ctw (guessing it is likely around a 1.5c center with two 0.75c side diamonds) in a size 5.5 platinum setting; VVS1 clarity; E color; excellent cut.

(No information was given to me regarding fluorescence, polish, or symmetry; I did receive 3 photos, but of poor quality)

The woman is asking $4000 for the ring, and this ---- on the surface ---- seems reasonable enough....?
I am sincerely hoping this community can offer some advice on the ring, its value compared to the asking price, proper way to proceed from this point (since the ring is being sold online, from another state, and I can't see/hold it), etc, etc.

Thanks so much!

Get a scan of the AGS report or report number. You can look up the proportions.

But I think this is a scam. The retail price of this would be over $20,000

I also think it is a BIG scam. I think it would be a LOT more than $20,000 because a 1.5 E VVS is going to be more than $20k alone. Never buy from an unknown source out of state like that. The low price is a big red flag.

If you tell us your budget, we would be happy to help you choose diamonds and setting for a 3 stone ring. But if you haven't looked at diamonds lately, I will warn you that they are very high compared to 20 years ago!

Much too suspicious and I would want to see a copy of the AGS memo first before proceeding.

The price don't sound right at all, ask for the certification and please ensure store has good reputation.

Craigslist.. SCARY.. you would be better off to post your budget and ask some of these wonderful PS'ers to find you something.. they have all kinds of places to look....

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I appreciate it.

My anniversary is coming up in just over a month, so I am thinking that is likely not enough time to order loose stones or have a custom build. (?)

I will post additional information on my budget and what size/type of stones and ring I am wanting if this is not correct, tho.

The first engagement ring I bought back in 1992 was a 1/3 carat marquise, and it cost me about $1000...have no clue what the specifics on color, clarity, cut, etc were.
I thought that the ring I asked about might have been priced low, but just wasn't certain. I will see if this woman will respond with a copy of the cert, but figuring you all are correct about it being a possible scam....

Thanks again!
