Hi everyone!
This is my first time posting but I've been lurking for a while now. I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to jewelry so I need some advice. DH wants to upgrade my ER from a .70 to a 2 carat stone approx. He asked me if I wanted to upgrade the setting as well and that's where I'm torn. I have a Blue Nile tapered baguettes setting. Even though I like it, I can't say I love it. I love the tapered baguette look, like the classic HW, but obviously this is not it. I like the claw prongs on the HW. Should I send the ring to a jeweler and have it modify with another basket or should I start from scratch with another setting?

Could you post a photo of your setting. The specialists will be able to give you better advice if you do that.
I am not sure whether your setting can be easily adapted; it will depend on the type of setting whether the head can be replaced. But since you do not love your setting, I would change it.

You could keep your current setting and put a coloured stone in it.

I highly doubt you could have your current setting modified to accommodate a 8mm stone and have it look proportionally pleasing.
Start over even if you want to keep that original style. Have fun, lucky girl. :wavey:

Thanks for your replies!
New question, with a 20-30k budget (including diamond) how would you spend it and where would you go for the setting?

Acinom- I tried posting a pic but I'm not sure how to do it.

Will this be your forever setting? If not, I'd spend most of the budget on center.

Yes, I want it to be my forever setting.

What kind of settings do you prefer. Classic, modern or vintage and could you describe your dream setting.

For me, a beautiful ring is a full package deal and I love handforged settings and a bit of diamondsin the shank. If you prefer solitaires it's a different 'calculation'

I like the classic settings. I want something timeless and delicate that I can wear everyday and of course, gorgeous! I have read about SK, VC and LM. Are there any other places that I should be looking into?

I personally love Victor's work! I have two designs from him. Do you like a halo, solitaire or 'solitaire' with diamonds in the shank?
ERD is also worth looking into: they make handforged and CAD/cast rings at a great pricepoint.

Have you seen a setting that you prefer? Based on that we can advice you a vendor. And make an estimation regarding the costs and determine whether it's best to get stone and setting from the same vendor or not.

And then you start with a stone. What are your requirements-
- what shape
- modern cut or an antique cut (or a newly cut 'vintage cut' like the August Vintage Round or Canera round)
- color preference
- carat weight or size preference?
- etc

Steven Kirsch for me.
