I have a 1.5 carat Pear shape diamond that I want to put in a setting but unsure what type would be best. Let me describe the overall look I want. A two-tone with round diamonds on the side (0.5 carat weight on each side). I am thinking of using a vice setting but unsure if that is the best way to go? Also, wondering since I have a H color diamond do I want to surround it with yellow gold or white gold? What do you think. The more opinions the better. Thanks.

What no one has any comments on this one?????

H in a pear Id go with yellow gold but it really depends on the diamond.
Yellow gold with plat prongs should also be ok.
The pears Iv looked at show color fairly easily so in my non-expert opinion you might want to stay away from a white ring.

What are plat prongs?

plat prongs = platinum prongs

When you say 'two toned', what exactly do you mean? Do you mean that you want the diamond to be set in one metal, and the rest of the ring in another metal? Or do you want the shank to be both white gold/platinum and yellow gold?

The two tone I was thinking of is with the stone set in one and actual band having both white gold and yellow gold.

Hi Reebs,

Glad you finally got your pear. I like the 2-tone setting idea, but with an H color fancy shape, I would probably go with a yellow gold shank with a white metal head and white accents. What is a "vice" setting?

I've seen pear sides with a center pear and I think it looks great!

diamondlil,

I was wondering your reasoning behind doing the white accents? Do you think the yellow gold around the diamond would make it look even worse for color? A vice setting (probably not the technical term) is where the diamond sides are held, that way is what I had in mind.

Reebs,

The white metal vs. yellow setting is really just a personal preference. I am a color nut. I prefer icy white diamonds in general (D,E,F) and even more so for fancy shapes since they show more color generally. I can notice more warmth visually when I see an H or I stone set in a white gold or platinum ring. When a stone with a little color is set in a yellow gold shank, the contrast between the yellow and the diamond gives the appearance of a whiter diamond. I would still set the diamond in a white metal head though since the prongs on the stone could cast a little more color on the stone making it look a little more tinted.

How does your H diamond look? Is it totally white to your eyes? Maybe you could take the stone and look at it resting in both a white gold setting and a yellow gold setting just to get an idea of your preference. Do you have pics of your pear? When you say "vice" setting, do you mean half bezels possibly? A picture would clear that up for me as well.

Since deciding to keep my pear, I am having a custom setting made for it using pears as sidestones. It will be yellow gold with a platinum head for my center stone. Each side pear will be set in a small bezel of platinum and burnished into the yellow gold (set similar to the Tiffany Etoile band in yellow gold with platinum bezels around each tiny round stone). I've be told this is to keep any color from the yellow metal from creeping into the little stones. Makes sense I think.

No pictures. It's at the jewelers being appraised.

It looks white to my eyes.

Anyone else have an opinion on this topic????
