Advice on Color and Price

Looking at an emerald cut diamond and just about ready to pull the trigger. It is 1.72ct, H, VVS2, Ex Pol, Ex Sym, No Flor. I think the Cut is VG or Ex. It is GIA cert. My guy is giving it to me for $12,800 and making the setting for me at cost.

My 1st question: is H color on an emerald too low? It looks really nice in the store and the dealer said that the high quality of the Cut, Pol and Sym have alot to do with making an H look much better. I can't tell much to the naked eye though and wanted more advanced advice.

My 2nd question: is this a good price on the stone? From what I can tell it is a good deal, but again, another set of advice always helps.

Thanks from a first time poster!!!

No lab assigns cut grades to emerald cuts. So the cut grade was not excellent or very good. You have to judge them by their faceting and their light return.

H color is not too low.

Price is good- http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Very-Good-Cut-Emerald-Diamond-1452967.asp This is the nearest comparable I could find: It's a nice looking stone with potential at the same carat weight, with one color grade higher and one clarity grade lower. Same price.

I would ask for the dimensions, depth and table measurements. They won't tell us much, but will tell us a bit more.

Gypsy,

Thank you for the input. I will try to get the dimensions depth and table measurements.

Any other thoughts out there on the H for an emerald cut? If there are no resounding "Don't do it" comments, I guess we are moving on to the setting!

I think H should be fine for an emerald cut.

I had an I step cut and while it faced up very white, when viewed through the pavilion I could see a very very faint warmth. If you want your stone to appear colorless from all angles I would go with an H or better. Can't wait to see what you decide.

Gypsy,

Here is the information. What do you think?

Emerald Cut

Clarity Grade: VVS2

I'm not Gypsy, and I really think she is better to answer your question than I am but I'll offer my 2 cents anyway. :))

If you could evaluate a fancy cut based on the numbers alone, then your stone would look really good, unfortunately though, especially with step cuts the appearance of the facets and how they align are what gives it it's beauty. Are you able to post pictures of the stone?

edit: I see where gypsy asked you for this information and already explained the limitations. sorry. =)

Christina, that was an excellent post.

Emerald-in-the-rough. It faces up at 8x6 and is not over-deep. The table is in the right range. No red flags in the numbers! As long as it is BRIGHT and there are no facets that stay dark as you move it around (side to side and so forth), it's a solid deal. :wavey: Pictures when you have it would be lovely.

Thank you both. I don't anticipate having a picture of it for a couple weeks. I am having the setting made now and the stone is with the jeweler. I will be sure to post when I get it!

Thank you and congratulations!

I'm so excited for you! Step cuts are so special, and unlike any other cut, you can truly get lost in the faceting. I can't wait to see pics! Congratulations.

Gypsy: It would help if I at least reviewed the thread though!

I was going back through some of my old posts looking for something, and I realized I never posted a picture of the final product!

Here it is a year and a half later.... (not a great picture, I know)
