Hi everyone,

I am a complete novice to diamonds and just made an order with blue nile for my engagement ring! I wanted some opinion regarding this. I brought a diamond from Blue nile.

I did alot of reading on pricescope and good old mind webpage regarding the 4Cs, fluroscence, the HCA calculator/TIC scores, the ideal pavillion/crown angles, depth, table and girdle width of a round diamond.

I managed to narrow my choices to two diamonds.

Both are excellent in their gia rating in cut symmetry and polish.

Here are the specifications (GIA cert):

First diamond:
1.58ct
F colour
VVS2
Dimensions: 7.48 -7.53x4.62mm
LW ratio 1.01
Table 56%
Depth 61.6%
Medium faceted girdle (3.5%)
Pavillion angle 40.8
Crown angle 34
Faint Flurosence.
The only inclusion reported is a pinpoint and that is at 7 o clock within the periphery of the crown when looking down.
HCA score: 1 - within TIC
This was 10900 GBP (17400 USD)
Tax 20% = 13080 gbp (21050 usd)

Second diamond
1.51ct
E colour
VVS2
Dimensions: 7.37-7.39x4.53 mm
LW ratio 1.00
Table 56%
Depth 61.4%
Medium faceted girdle 3.5%
Pavillion angle 40.6
Crown angle 35
No fluroscence
The inclusions are pin points - two at 9 o clock, one of which is within the crown and one is periphery of table, and one can be viewed at 6 o clock when pavillion is facing up.
HCA score 0.8.
Price: 13200 GBP (21200 USD)
tax = 15840 gbp (25450 usd)

Both diamond had not been reported to have ingraining.

I ended up with the first diamond with faint flurosence as it did not make sense to spend roughly 3K GBP (4.5K USD) for going up to E colour and no flurosence.

I am worried I may have made a wrong choice... partly because the first diamond is relatively cheap compared to other diamonds of the same specifications in the blue nile inventory, also when I tried on other online websites including on pricescope, J.allen, quality diamonds uk - similar diamonds appear more expensive.

Do you think there is something wrong with the diamond? Would the faint fluroscence matter?
Should I be concern about the faint flurosence and the LW ratio not being 1.00?
Also do you think the diamond is reasonably priced?

I would be grateful for any advice/opinions and suggestions! Thanks!

The risk of buying from Blue Nile is that you don't have a magnified photo of the stone or an idealscope image. You could have easily also looked at F VS1 with no visual difference. The numbers are within a good range, but without an idealscope image, we don't have a clue as to whether we'd buy it or not. If I were buying from overseas, I would absolutely buy with photos, videos, and idealscope/ASET images only, because a return will be a lot of trouble. The time to get advice is before you buy, not after. I do hope this stone works well for you, though, since it sounds like it is too late to cancel.

Thanks for the reply!
I only made the order today so I think I may be able to cancel.

I forgot to mention both stones had excellent in cut symmetry polish.
Even with the information given - does it not gurantee a good diamond?
I don't think we have that kind of technology available in the uk. I had trouble finding a good online uk store to buy loose diamonds as most did not offer images or aset:ideals cope.

I tried many sites but could not find a diamond due to the eliminating system
I was using as a guide- the angles, hca calculator.

Shall I cancel and order a vs1 diamond for the same price ?

The numbers look good. BN has a great return policy. Look at it before you set it and decide if you need to utilise the return policy.

Did you have their vault manager look at it for you? What did he say?

No I was not aware they had a vault manager. I did call the diamond consultant to discuss the diamond but they reassured me that the specs looks fine. I assumed that the diamond is not in their hands - as when I mentioned why there is a variation in price for similar specs diamond they said its because the offer price is different from their vendors. as they mentioned they had having different vendors.

I'm going to call them again and ask about their vault manager.

I was thinking of finding a gemologist to inspect appraise diamond when it arrives.

Called and spoke to an advisor she reassured they check the diamond that it matches the Gia cert before dispatching. Also said a vvs2 and f colour there is nothing to really look at and it would be eye clean.

I feel a bit reassured but we will see.

You'll never be dissapointed with Blue Nile. You can always return it if you didn't like it. The have great customer service and return policy.

Thank you :)
