Hello,

I''ve looked over the board more than a few times and after looking at some diamonds today decided to ask for advice. The jeweler I used is a friend of a good friend and I believe trustworthy. I know a few people who have done a lot of business over the years with him and continue to do so. I don''t know why I''m qualifying it but I am. :)

I didn''t walk away with all the specs (which is going to make some of you unhappy

) but I copied most of them.

$14k

7.57 7.60*4.77
Table 59
Depth 62.9
Cut Grade VG
Polish VG
Symmetry VG

Size 1.71
Color E
SI 2

On the SI 2, he said he never would sell or recommend SI 2 to someone he knows but that this one was better than he has seen in the past. He believes that GIA could adjust it to SI or SI 1 (maybe some BS here) if he sent it back. He was adamant on how good it looked. I looked through lens and saw some stuff but nothing major. nothing to the visible eye on the outside.

Showed me better diamonds and cheaper diamonds...seemed like no nonsense kind of person.

He did show me a diamond that was VS 1 same size in F color for more money...but when I compared the diamonds I liked the one above better...sparkled nicely and I could see the difference in color...if that’s possible.

He said he didn''t like that diamond as much plus it wasn''t in the price range we spoke about.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What do you think???

We need more info to help you...sorry! At least the crown and pavilion angles.

But I will tell you right off the bat that it looks too deep for my liking, I would pass. Not to mention that I don''t love his sales tactics already from what you''ve said...we''re just heard too many stories of people getting burned by "trustworthy friends of friends".

Several things...

I assume this is a round cut?

If so, it is a little on the deep side. We need the crown and pavilion angle if possible?

Did you check out the stone in lights other than under the store lights?

Price wise is just slightly over, which is expected of a B&M.

Don''t have angles but will get the next time i visit. What is an ideal depth and how much does it add to the cut? I''m a newbie...be nice. ;)

Oops...yes it''s a round cut.

What''s B&M?

I see your point on the whole "friend of a friend" deal. But my counter or my answer to that is that the person that recommended i see this jeweler does a lot of business with him and there is a family relationship there. i still see your point though.

I don''t mean to dis your friend, but at the same time, just because a friend has a family relationship doesn''t mean they are an honest/good/well stocked jeweler...

Oops, forgot to answer your first question. These are the ranges you should stay in and it is important that ALL specs fit in these ranges, not just some of them:

depth - 60 - 62% - although you can allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond, use your eyes.
